Very appropriate when you consider that sometimes they were just OK and sometimes they were destructive. I knew we were in trouble when I had to start bringing 6-packs of rebuilt intermittents. How dare you do this to a film!!! In 22 years this is only the 2nd film that I received in this poor of shape. The other one - I didn't run. Technicolor won't tell me where it came from. After 2 1/2 hours I finally was able to figure out the heads and tails - which were all on the wrong reels. The person also condensed reels 4 & 5 to one reel. The scratches on this film were green & yellow - and the film was crinkled on the reels changes. Canterbury, New Zealand Registered: Aug 2004 posted 02-16-2012 04:50 PM                        I'm currently enjoying going to the cinema and watching lots of old movies, I've mentioned Back to the Future, The Matrix, got Ghostbusters last week and this week its Alien. But whats really pissing me off is this is turning into an odyssey of film-done-really-badly-in-years-gone-by coming back to bite. I thought that the Matrix was bad, Ghostbusters was worse; you know its "noticable" when the whole audience cracks up as the movie head comes up battered to hell and back. Still got Top Gun (yeah, I know you guys hate this one), Men In Black, Rocky Horror Picture Show (that's gonna be fun!), Close Encounters and Die Hard to go. Advertised start time was 8:00pm, but at twenty past we were all sitting on the carpet outside the auditorium. A cheery young thing appears and says they are having "projection problems" and they don't know when it'll be working. Ten minutes later we're in and seated, the sconces dim out, and to a dark screen one hears the 20th Century Fox sting. A few seconds later, and the screen illuminates and we have titles. It's almost immediately evident that this isn't a 35mm presentation. Not only the lack of print damage, but the obligatory stack of ads and trailers didn't appear, and with a plattered up print it's a bit hard to skip those elements. Anyway, I digress. I can't stop looking at the line of text at the bottom of the screen in little print that says Copyright 1979 Fox blah blah blah. It's in small font, but it looks wrong; the widths of the sides of the letters weren't consistent, some thinner, some thicker. Just like you get with a data projector when the computer is set to a vastly different resolution to the projector, and the scaler tries to fix it. Looked wrong. So I'm continuing to watch this movie, and it still doesn't look "right". I'm thinking that whoever did this transfer to digital cinema ought to reconsider his/her career choice. And then the penny drops. I'm watching a DVD. Eventually the credits crawl, and there's no lights and folks are unsteadily and en masse leaving, and eventually someone presses a button and the lights come up. Normally this is a job trusted to the automation, but there was little automated about this presentation. So I'm amongst the last to leave, leaning on the wall on the way out, the titles finish, and we get the THX thing, followed by the copyright warning that this DVD is licenced for home viewing only. So, either: a) Whatever media they had Alien on couldn't be projected for some reason, and some enterprising individual scurried out to Blockbuster and rented the DVD and saved the show, or b) They always planned to show the DVD, in which case this is cinema done If this really were the case this cinema would suck big time. Surely no-one tries to pass off DVD as a movie in anything but the tiniest auditoria?
