so i'm told that a chain i work for does pay shipping on replacements for lab-damaged reels. why do some pay and others not? is this something that is negotiated?

at any rate, i'm stuck with 2 prints of paranormal activity 2 that are fogged in exactly the same place in reel 1 (about a minute before reel's end, with the mother in the bathtub: a nice bright scene that really shows off the yellow discoloration). looking at the excised lab-splice frames, the image looks exactly the same! what are the odds?

Often the labs will make the effort to avoid lab splices whenever it is reasonably feasible without wasting footage. After all, a reel with a lab splice has noticeably more chances that there will be a bad section surrounding that splice, so if they can work around it, they do. That's why you will often see a lab splice on a leader or more common, you will see an unnecessary 20 feet of clear junk at one end or the other of a reel. That is the lab knowing the end of their 6000' reel of print stock is almost over so they slug in some junk to prevent a lab splice within a reel. With that in mind, it is very possible hundreds of reels have a lab splice in nearly the same position like you experienced.

Most of the time this doesn't work out though, for if most reels are around 1700 feet, any way you do that math it doesn't equal out near the 6000 feet raw print stock roll, and that's too much to waste...hence the lab splice in the middle of a reel.

I just wish the labs would do what I've always requested, and that is to use spliced "end of rolls" for trailer printing. However that would take quite a bit of planning and they are on a very tight schedule.

hmm, i'm not quite following how a lab splice would consistently end up a minute before the end of the reel.

but i'm most curious to know the magic incantation that will spare us paying shipping on replacement reels due to lab damage.

How much time passed between receiving the print(s) before the damage was detected and reported?

Both my my "PA-2" prints were clean of lab splices.

But if I encounter a lab splice that has that discoloration afterwards, esp if it's about a foot, I just cut that section out as we're supposed to do with lab splices.

But, that's rare that I see that discoloration-just that "blop" where the splice is at.

bum reels were discovered and reported to manager the afternoon of delivery (wednesday). after observing the on-screen effect at thursday's 10pm and midnight shows, manager reported to, well, whoever fields these reports the day thereafter, friday. the decision had already been taken not to order new reels, and the report was made at my insistence.

is it simply a matter of timing? that's another reason to resist the "let's wait and see if a) it's a hit and b) anyone complains" attitude.

Every time we have complained of a "Bad Print", the person on the other end of the conversation asks this key question.

"How many REFUNDS have you had to give for this print?"

Money talks.

Please don't do that. If you cut out a section of film you could be cutting out a critical line of dialogue and worse yet, out of all the prints made, the one YOU are handling just might end up being the one that is randomly selected to become the future archive print while most or all of the other prints are junked. Its better to have a color shift than any missing footage, even if it is only a couple of feet.

I've always been told that,in general, you have 24 hrs to report any damage after receiving a print. The damage is reported directly to Deluxe Film Services (DFS) or Technicolor by the appropriate staff member.

As far as being charged for shipping, I would think that DFS or Technicolor would be the ones to pay for shipping and replacement costs of reels that were received damaged whether its a new unused print or a used print circuited from another theatre.

We had to return Reel 1 of Eat, Pray and Love because half of the reel had visable sproket holes in the printed area a few months ago.

I want to return reel 1 and reel 7 of both of my Hereafter prints because the opening text and end credits make it look like my xenon bulb has about 900,000 hours on it and is flickering like crazy. My guess is that they just didn't do the text well on the computer they used to make it and something got screwed up in the transfer to film.

/offtopic.

Whoever had Print # A0561(2) of "Waking Life" (2001) you suck major ass and should be put to death.

The head and tail or EVERY reel has, for about 1 foot each end, some sort of PERMANENT red marker slobbered over the Dolby Digital and analog tracks, and the sprocket area on the opposite side. Nothing I tried would remove that crap...and I have a show in about an hour and am looking forward to fucked up changeovers due to your stupidity.

And to top it off, every reel was taped down with fiberglass packing tape!! Now there is adhesive and fiberglass thread residue on every leader. Great job asswipe. [fu]

People like you are one example of why the industry is gonna be better off without film.....and I especially hate you for making me say that.

Time limit to edit expired so the follow-up, yep there were reversions at every reel change...wouldn't have been an issue if the red crap wasn't all over the analog track too... [Mad] [Mad]

Wow, no one has sucked for a long time. Must be the digital.

Anyway, whoever had print #23 of Melancholia before us, YOU SUCK.

Emulsion scratch down the middle of the film from the beginning until the end. And because we couldn't get "studio approval" over the weekend, Technicolor couldn't get us a new print.

I'm picturing getting a drive that is corrupted or in a destroyed CRU... [Eek!]
