Theater A has a dedicated person upstairs threading, pressing play, whatever. That person is the "projectionist". Theater B has nobody upstairs most of the time. The manager is responsible for setting the "server start timer" or pressing play upstairs or via some sort of remote. That manager is the "projectionist". "Oh we don't have projectionists." Really? Who ingests your content? Who builds your playlists? Who schedules your shows? Who loads your keys? Who moves your content around the building as needed? Who verifies your keys? The manager? That manager IS the projectionist. You may not call him that and it may only be something that occupies 25% of his time, but he is in fact the "projectionist" for that amount of payroll time. Only DCS installations can honestly claim they have no projectionists. I'm the "content" ingester. I'm the playlist builder. The xenon lamp changer. The one who gets called at home when one of the green taillights has turned red. The one who performs monthly filter cleaning. The one who fills out the weekly checklist on the bulb hours and wattage and ft lamberts. And the one who installs replacement concession or box POS terminals, the one who gets the receipt printer working again, the one who gets to call IT when the digital menu board goes dark or plays a blue screen, the one who gets the time clock printer working, then delivering to the employee who hit "print" 20 times 20 copies of his current pay stub...yeah. I think we can all drop the fear of that word. I witnessed first-hand a customer at our twin haranguing the manager (who projects because it's a twin) because the movie wasn't showing at some showtime she seemed to have made up because it wasn't even close and asking to see the projectionist....wtf? Otherwise. you spend all day explaining what you do - and then somebody says "you get paid for watching movies? "Booth Operator" was just that: a part time individual who just threads the projector(s) and keep the feature on the screen. If any problems arises with the equipment, he tells the "Projectionist" of the issues he discovered that needs attention.  |  IP: Logged Frank Cox Film God Posts: 2234 From: Melville Saskatchewan Canada Registered: Apr 2011 posted 01-27-2012 05:51 PM                        Back in the "old days" here you had to have a license from the provincial Fire Commissioner's Office to be a projectionist, i.e. run a booth. They removed that requirement quite a few years ago and now any idiot can do it. Of course, with the digital cinema, neither idiots or anyone else will be doing it before long anyway....
