Add that you go on to say that you found the LF sequences just annoying… but by turning those down you've affected what the sound designer and director were shooting for just as much as if you put a colored filter over the lens because you thought the film's coloring needed warmth.
Where did I say that it was too loud? I enjoyed it but LF were all over the place.
I was told Nolan was there the week before so I'm reasonably sure that that was intentional.
I didn't particularly like that though. I thought it was a wrong artistic choice/bad mixing (or maybe bad Sound system? Wrong place in the room? Lots of variables).

As everybody else is saying, we're with you when you're saying that cinemas are running their films too soft. But don't stick to that number, it does not mean much in the real world.

We don't play movies at 7 - usually we are somewhere in the 5.x range. We're playing Jurassic World at 5.5 and I think it sounds terrific at that level - IN MY THEATER. It might sound too soft at that level in some other theater.

One time as a promotion, we did a matinee of "Space Jam" and we advertised it as a "special EXTRA LOUD!! showing." We even had some of the KIDS come out and say it was too loud. (Of course that was when we still had our old Peavey speakers, so maybe that had something to do with it.)

The bottom line is, in my 36 years in this business I've had the occasional "wow that is loud!" comment and even the occasional volume-related complaint, but not one person has ever said they wish it had been louder.

I must also say that when someone has told me 'it runs at 5.5 and trust me it's very loud" I then found the overall level too low in the auditorium.

Nothing personal Mike, it's not directed at anybody in particular.

I would. [Wink]

Marco, I don't mean to harp the fader 7 issue; different theaters will have that represent different things. It was just an opportunity to vent a bit about the issue I've had since THX-certified theaters where reference level meant reference level largely went away, and that's of 99% of theaters I've attended playing movies at much too soft a volume level.

Some IMAX theaters are still good about that and I go to them when I can; AMCs tend to play their Liemax and ETX theatres as softly as they do their other houses, and Regal's RPX theatres are getting worse.

I guess I don't understand the "need for excessive loudness." I judge the sound by the dialogue. There is a comfortable listening level for dialogue, and then there's a point where it just sounds too loud and grates on the ears. That's my theory anyway. I like it where the voices are natural sounding AND an explosion can make the floor vibrate. I don't need the floor vibrating with casual conversations.

One thing I've found is that with better speakers in better rooms where little to no EQ is needed to hit "reference"...one can generally play the movie louder without the "pain and suffering."

Mike, I'd suspect that with your current speaker systems, you can play a movie a bit louder without it sounding painful as compared to your previous system.

I judge the sound by the dialogue.
As you should. Who would want the dialog to be physical painful throughout a movie? (insert screenwriting jokes here). If the director actually intends painful dialog, then that director is not only an asshole, but (s)he's incompetent and uninformed as well. And don't tell me that directors always know what they're doing. Because they don't. I'd say that very few of them actually know much about the presentation side.
