In order to increase my consumption, I picked up the Pioneer VSX-03TXH receiver today. It was an impulse item near the checkout and I just grabbed it while I was waiting in line to pay for my Slim Jims. Anyway, the sound is really tight. And I don't mean phiggidy phat tight ass... well maybe I do. But "tight" is the perfect way to describe the higher resolution, less compressed sound this thing makes.
I still have a bit of tweaking to do, but I love the included microphone that helps you calibrate speaker distance (it was right on), standing waves and even phasing. All of those constant pops for the phase check reminded me of when Brad and I rewired half of the speakers at the Chinese 16 due to shoddy installation. The pops indicate if the speaker is wired in or out of phase. The receiver will adjust if something is wired out of phase. I only screwed up on three speakers!!! (kidding). It also does auto-EQ and auto level set, but it sounded waaaaay too bright for my taste. Treble-city (which also gave the illusion of it being louder than it was)! In order to get Da True Sound, you have to set the levels and adjust EQ yourself. Not quite 1/3 octave, but so much better than just coarse bass and treble controls. I find that I have to turn it up a bit when listening to Dolby TruHD, down a bit when listening to DTSHDMA, and waaay down when playing videogames. Still way phat, though. It tha bomb.
