Banned for sheer ignorance and guilty of trying to spread it to the masses.

I want to see the playback hardware prices come down some more, and I have nothing to lose (other than $$$) by waiting.
Paul,
Just watch the sales over at Fry's... they have deals on players now and then. I can guarantee you that prices ARE NOT going to come down now that BR controls the market... I still see extremely high prices on software. I stopped by an FYE yesterday and prices were near list! I settled on their deal for used BR disks where you buy two and get the third at half price. The discs all looked brand new as though they had never been rented. This is a great way to save bucks on BR, especially on set editions.

Saying that prices are high on BR material based on FYE's high prices is ridiculous. I could say that CD prices are ginormous because FYE and Borders sell them at high prices too. But the reality is that the high prices at those 2 stores have more to do with the stores in question than the overall market price.

We have an FYE here and everything is priced close to list price. CD's, DVD's everything.

Anyone who just walks into a store like fye and pays near or full MSRP prices on Blu-ray movies is LAZY. Shop around. Those who can't be bothered with that should stop bitching about high prices.

Customers can save at least a few bucks on Blu-ray movies just by walking into a Wal-Mart or Sam's Club store. They can save even more by shopping online at places like Amazon.com. This point has also been discussed numerous times in this thread already. Too bad it isn't sinking into the skulls of certain people.

Oh come on Bobby, Pull your head out of your ass! We have more stores selling BR along the Wasatch Front than you have in the entire state of Oklahoma. The only decent pricing around here is at Best Buy... I went to FYE because a friend told me about the rental sales... And actually the pricing on those was excellent... saving almost two thirds on boxed sets.

I will very definately continue to mention high price retailers like FYE, Borders, Circuit City, Etc. here so folks that read here can simply pass on them. If pricing by you is lower thats great... they have to entice folks to move to Oklahoma somehow [Roll Eyes] .

I recommend waiting to buy a Blu-ray player until after the CEDIA show in Denver (Sept 4 - 7).

I don't think the prices will come down to reasonable levels until the holiday shopping season, but we may hear some announcements about the availability of full Blu-ray 2.0 functionality from the hold-outs (Sony and Samsung have both promised BD-Live functionality, but haven't delivered yet). Some new products may also be announced with availability in Q4 that are worth waiting for over the current crop of players.

It's only a couple of weeks away, so I see no reason to pick anything up right now.

Mark, you ignorant troll. First of all Amazon.com and many other Internet-based retailers aren't based in Oklahoma. On that point, feel free to pull your head out of your own ass. Then ram it into a brick wall a few times to get some of the shit out of your hair and ears.

Second, you don't know shit about Oklahoma or what's available in the Sooner State. Keep acting like you know everything from your cocoon in Utah. You don't hear me talking shit about Utah.

And keep on mentioning high prices at stores like fye and keep conveniently not mentioning lower prices at very common stores like Wal-Mart. Keep spinning it as if prices at fye represent the prices of BD everywhere. Keep up the FUD campaign to bring back HD-DVD.

Yeah, if you want to contribute to the ruination of American retail by shopping in those shit-holes.

Who said anything about shopping? Just steal them from those places. While you're there, organize a union or two!

Today I consumed Tim Burton's The Nightmare before Christmas on Blu-ray. It was delicious! As an American, it is my duty to consume and do nothing but consume, but I can tell you right now that I will never consume the DVD or LaserDisc versions again (both of which looked and sounded identical to each other). Consuming this version makes the DVD version look black and white by comparison. The sound also features plenty of panned dialog, even to the surrounds. In fact, this is probably the most impressed I've been with Blu-ray so far... likely because I was so used to the DVD. It definitely looked better than the 3D version shown digitally every year at theaters as well (which was out of frame when I saw it). And it absolutely sounded better. Also, there are no annoying glasses to wear with this version so you don't feel like an asshole.

Here are a few comparison shots I made with my digital camera comparing the DVD and Blu-ray versions. Both were taken with the camera in the same exact position with the same settings on the same TV. DVD was 480p and Blu-ray was 1080i.

 -
The opening walking tree.

 -
Close up of Sally. She's blue? I never even knew that until I saw the theatrical 3D version, but that holds up just as well if not better here.

 -
A super close up of the rooster before it crows. Look at all of the compression artifacts on the DVD version, with virtually none on the Blu-ray version. That is because the DVD format was designed for homeless people.

Conclusion: Go out and consume this version ASAP! Consume, consume consume! Be fat. Be merry! Consume!

PS - HD-DVD sucks.

The regular DVD of Nightmare Before Christmas wasn't 16x9, so of course the Blu-Ray's going to look better than that.

Of course nothing looks better than my laser-rotted CAV box set!

It was 16:9 but not anamorphic. Are you implying that if it were anamorphic that the Blu-ray version would be less impressive?

At least the DVD version would look less craptastic.

A bit less, definitely. But it'd still be lacking in color and have those compression artifacts.
