David Stambaugh Film God Posts: 4021 From: Eugene, Oregon Registered: Jan 2002 posted 07-03-2008 05:49 PM                        Sony pulls latest PS3 firmware upgrade Sony pulls PS3 update after some gamers report bricked systems By Tim Conneally, BetaNews July 3, 2008, 12:18 PM Just hours after making it publicly available, Sony has pulled the PlayStation 3's latest firmware download (v2.40) due to reports of inoperable consoles after the update process. SCEA's director of Corporate Communication and Social Media, Patrick Seybold, played down the problem, saying that incoming calls regarding failures have been of a low volume, and the removal is only temporary. If incidents are in any way reflected by the voluminous message board chatter on the subject, it has only affected a fraction of users. Of the hundreds of posts reporting v2.40 update status for Playstation.blog readers, only several dozen posted system failures, and conditions surrounding those were somewhat inconsistent. The worst outcome that several users have reported is a PS3 that simply does not boot after upgrading. One user said, "I tried to update to v. 2.40 this morning. Probably around 10:30 or 11:00 PST. It rebooted and left me hanging on the screen with the squiggly wave lines. It did not make it to the XMB. Upon calling Sony, I unplugged the machine. I plugged it back in. I restarted it. I held down the power button until it turned red again. Then I repowered the machine. Now I don't even get to the wavy squiggly line screen. I just get a black screen." Several other users reported the same. The firmware update added several notable features, most prominent of which is the ability to access the XMB operating system screen while playing PS3 software. It also added an Internet search command that does not first require an open browser, and a new "trophy collection," which lists all the user's objective-based trophies collected from games which support that feature. Some users who reported successful installs, however, report issues with these new features, claiming that attempts to access the XMB in-game or check their trophy collection both result in frozen systems -- but nothing as serious and incurable as a bricked PS3. Sony has said it is "working diligently to isolate the problem...and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up." This is just what I've heard, no clue if it is true. One must LOL @ Sony, but hopefully they will get this fixed as soon as possible. Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 07-03-2008 07:22 PM                     I've read rumors this new firmware update was also supposed to improve the internal DTS-HD decoder, such as getting it to play certain New Line BDs with DTS-HD 7.1 in the correct channel mapping as well as supporting DTS-ES 6.1 and DTS 24/96. The same rumor claims the de-interlacing feature for 1080i to 1080p is included as well as improvements to DVD upconversion functions. If that's really true I hope Sony can get 2.40 fixed pretty soon. As for the gaming features primarily mentioned for 2.40...well, I guess I really don't care about them. The trophies thing seems kind of silly, even if XBox360 was already doing "achievements." Woopdie freaking doo! It looks like they are selling them for $12 each. Ha, It wouldn't surprise me that the beloved PS-3 isn't functioning 100%. Knock the PS3 all you like, but it was the main thing that caused the death of HD-DVD. If the PS3 is crappy, what does that say about those obsolete HD-DVD players? The firmware updates for PS3 are adding more functions to a machine that was already great to begin with. The updates are just making PS3 even better. BTW, for those who aren't just trolling in this thread, word is Sony will have the completed PS3 firmware update ready around the middle of this week. Supposedly the update will be numbered "2.41." The functionality added to the system is useful for the online community functions. I'm excited to see that SCEA is supporting the console as much as their past game consoles. The Playstation game console and their CRT televisions are probably some of the few products that Sony makes that I can say I've had great luck with. Mark, You'll be pleased to know that I don't own any BD movies. Hell, I still haven't even bought a hi-def set. I was a little concerned about the quality I would get, but using component video on the ol' Sony CRT looks great. My roommate's PS3 has an unrelated problem where the player won't read any discs. I was hoping maybe a firmware might fix whatever the problem is. That will reset some stuff. I downloaded and installed it last night (along with getting a 255MB update for Super Stardust HD). No problems. The in-game XMB thing seems to work fine. The "trophies" feature doesn't seem to count anything you've already done with existing games played data, so you're basically starting from scratch at the time of that update. Not much publicity was given to the improvements for DVD and Blu-ray functions. The internal DTS decoder now supports all DTS decoding functions and correctly maps the 7.1 channel tracks on those New Line Cinema 7.1 BDs. In the System Information credits the DTS-HD thing no longer has a "limited" tagline.
