The two year mark has passed since Christie and AccessIT began installing digital projection systems at Carmike Cinemas locations. As of November 16, 94.4% of the 2300 systems mentioned in the original press release have been installed. 80% of 500 Real D systems Carmike agreed to install are now in operation. Nearly all of those Real D systems are showing Beowulf on that feature's opening weekend.

Here's the broad numbers as of 11/16/2007:

Carmike Cinemas has 273 locations in 37 states with a total of 2382 screens currently in operation.

I'm amazed that they put 3D in Bozeman and Butte MT, but not in Great Falls. (Much larger town.)

With 37 first run screens in ND converted to DLP, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to circuit a print into a small town like mine! The crazy thing is how run-down the Carmike cinemas in Grand Forks are. Would the patrons not notice new paint and carpet in the lobby before they saw a difference in the presentation of the "feature"

When will Digital Cinema become mainstream enough for me to be able to afford it on my small-town single screen? This is kinda important to me because with all the Carmike screens near me converted to DC, I can't get a print until it has been returned to the depot, processed, and then sent back out to me. My ETS depot is nearly 500 miles away!

The Carmike 10 in Great Falls had a Real D system previously, but the theater is currently running Beowulf in 2D. Carmike has been known to relocate hardware before, even with d-cinema involved. They've had a couple locations upgraded to d-cinema and then shortly closed soon afterward (with those systems moving elsewhere).

Not sure what the situation is in Great Falls. Either their Real D system is not operational for whatever reason (perhaps reasons alluded to in the last couple pages of this thread) or maybe it was relocated to another theater. The latter reason could be the case if viewer demographics demanded the move. The Carmike theater in Bozeman now has 2 Real D systems and one in Billings has 3 Real D systems installed. Do those cities have larger populations of younger adult movie-goers?

I was surprised when Carmike put two more Real D systems into their Lawton 8-plex (for a total of 3). I expected only 1 more system. The Lawton theater has more Real D systems than some significantly larger Carmike sites. But then I got to thinking about it. Fort Sill definitely skews the average age to a younger level and that could have affected the decision.

It will only become affordable when Hollywood can figure out some "group based" association that independent operators can join to get the same kinds of hardware discounts enjoyed by the major theater chains. The studios can accomplish that if they care to make it happen. Sadly, I'm not convinced all the distributors actually want to do so. Some may be pushing for consolidation of theater screens with small independent companies, especially those in smaller towns, falling casualty to the policy. Others are just pushing to kill theaters in general by promoting the removal of separate release windows for theater and home video.

NATO bought the Cinema Buyers Group from Wayne Anderson, who is the Managing Director for the CBG for NATO. The idea was for CBG members to obtain similar "deals" as the big boys get. It is a similar theory as using a booker rather than booking your theatre yourself.

If the rumors at ShowEast are true...the virtual print fees are coming to an end for everyone...it will make DC more expensive not less. I also maintain that the DLP technology is on shaky ground for continuation by TI...it is not hitting the numbers it needs.

The deadline to join CBG was a few weeks ago . . . . . . . I haven't heard if DCIP was open to outsiders beyond AMC, Regal and Cinemark.

Supposedly AccessIT is working on a second round of VPFs, but I'm not holding my breath.

VPFs for existing projectors are locked in for several years, **if** AccessIT gets a second round of VPFs worked out I'm sure the fees will be less than the first go round . . . . . . . but TDC, DCIP and CBG have not ramped up yet so until they get close to the end I think VPFs of some type will still be around until they finish. Wayne Anderson has been saying for some time now that if you don't get hooked up with an integrator (or CBG) soon you will end up buying your equipment without any VPFs available.

My fear is that a lot of the smaller operators will be left in the dust because they are waiting for the price to significantly come down, aren't big enough for AccessIT to chase or have not made contact with any integrators.

I just hope those who are buying their own equipment have assurances that they will get any/all parts required to meet DCI "approval" for little or no cost.

Probably the best hope for small places that haven't joined a buying group will be to get refurbished used equipment. It'll either be that, or make a big lease payment for the rest of your life. I just hope the inevitable upgrades won't make the movies incompatible with the "original" DC equipment.

Probably. Billings and Bozeman both have colleges that are part of the state university system -- Great Falls doesn't. Bozeman is seen as the "upscale" town in the state, as well. Great Falls has always been a "wannabe" Montana big city but has to take the scraps left from Billings, Missoula and Bozeman (and lately Helena).

I'm familiar with these remaining three as the company I work for used to own the Beaver Falls and West Mifflin locations. The projection equipment at Plaza 6 was a hodge-podge of total shit when it was sold to Carmike well over ten years ago. I doubt they've upgraded, yet I'm not surprised this theater hasn't gone digital since they don't really have much competition down that way. Maxi Saver, on the other hand, was a homogenous booth when it too was sold in the same deal that took Plaza off our hands. They had regular operators with decades of experience. If Carmike employees didn't wreak that booth there is no need for DLP.

Cinema 5 in Du Bois is right off Interstate 80. Its mountain country up there. Once again, no direct competition.

Mike...the 2nd amendment... oh wait...different arguement [Wink]

I would say the best hope is to continue with film if you are doing a good job with it. It is less expensive now and for the forseeable future. The equipment also has a much longer likelihood of surviving for decades.

As to 1st generation DCinema equipment...it is alread obsolete...you must be talking about the 2nd generation (2K machines)...one of the stupid things that Dcinema has done is to obsolete working 1st generation machines...smaller and sub-run houses would have done well with the first machines...it would have also shown that one could buy with confidence knowing that the industry wont just decide to quite supporting the technology. For what its worth, I recently had a mirror fail in a Barco DP50 (1.3K machine) and Barco WAS able to supply a replacement though it did have to come from Europe...not too bad considering the machine had VERY low production numbers and has been out of production for 4-years now.

That's a typo. Had that theater in Lexington listed correctly down in the full circuit wide listings. Along with fixing that mistake, I'm also updating the Ardmore, OK theater info, whose 5 DLP screens are now operational as of Friday.

Definately not true! I know for a fact that Access-IT is in negotiations to do another large lot of screens in a similar way although this time around it will cost the exhibitor more $$ than it did in the past. On a good note much of the upcomming D-Cinema install stuff will be handled by normal Cinema Supply Dealers/Installers and not soleley by Christie personel. Ditto for the Cinemark/AMC/Regal installs. The CBG will allow its members to buy equipment from whats on an approved list... IE: you won't get stuck with some piece of gear you don't like, and you will also have a choice on install and service.

We'll see what kind of "deal" they come away with...no guarantees yet though...the studios definately have noted they want to end VPF...not just reduce them.
