Screens are locations so 2800 is how many actual theatres are playing the film. They quoted named sources within Newmarket in that article. The revision is as under : Prints : Previous - 2500 Revised - 4000 Theatres : Previous - 2000 Revised - 2800. Unforeseen demand for tickets. Also on record by Newmarket execs is that even the revised figures are most likely subject to further upward revision. I guess, they will increase the number of theatres to 3100 and the number of prints to 4700 or so. In a day or two. But this whole episode makes me wonder whether in accomodating the request of Newmarket films, accomodating theatres knock off rival commitments. Is it so ? Whether Newmarket or any other distributor, none could have, to start with, engaged these many theatres - I am sure most exhibitors themselves might have, three weeks ago, dismissed this current reach for the film as pure fantasy. One major news site, Foxnews.Com called Newmarket as a Scrappy distributor. I wonder why they did so and what fault they could have possibly seen in Newmarket. I have been noting Newmarket since they pickep up the distribution of this film and there is absolutely nothing that they have said or done that should warrant such attacks. In fact, in every public statement released by Newmarket that I have seen, a reasoned and restrained response by them is everywhere. BTW, I saw the spoof trailer of this film (mixing this film with music and style in Kill Bill) hosted by a NYU student. Quite impressive it is. Also, keep in mind that most of the numbers are misquoted cuz of stupidity or not understanding the basis for the reports. The numbers from Variety for example reflect "engagements"... which is the number of screens (NOT prints) times the number of times shown. Bottom Line...other than from a financial point, WTF cares! Not because I care much about the religious agenda but because all the major distributors turned it down. Whether they were worried about controversy or they thought it was a turkey doesn't matter. This film will make the Big Boy film companies wake up. I would guess that the film has probably surpassed the $50 million mark in pre-sales alone (world-wide). That only accounts for 10 percent of the people who actually want to see the film. I have already spoke to people who have seen it, and yes it is pretty disturbing. However, I believe that this film will break a whole helluva lotta records for a Feburary release. We will be hearing about this one for a while. It will play the film in two of their largest auditoriums and eight thousand seats have already been pre sold to church groups. Signature Theatres will also play it on multiple screens at their two premier theatres the Dole Cannery and the Pearl Highlands. We told the driver there must be a mistake. He said no. The trailer picked up a lot of buzz even before Newmarket picked this up. It should not have been such a surprise. I never understood the risk factor studios were trying to consider. You heard so much talk of a backlash for those who release Last Temptation of Christ. The release of that movie had no effect on future revenues for that studio. I don't think many people in the Jewish community who may be offended by Passion will bother boycotting future Newmarket movies. Those who have reviewed have expressed many things, most unanimously, that this is a great film. Many even go to the extent of calling it the greatest movie they have ever seen. The violence and gore, many say, is too much - yet, many also claim the other parts in this film lend the strength to sustain the violence and gore at some places. I have only seen the trailer of this film. The scene in which a huge nail is pierced into Jesus' palm drew an instantaneous chill and fright within me, yet, when I had finished seeing the trailer, I had no doubt in my mind that this would be most powerful film I would see in many years or, I am not that old anyway, maybe, the most powerful film I have ever seen. Curiously, it remains to question - what were the people within the studios who were shown this film and who generously and unreservedly rejected this film really thinking about this film anyway ?  |  IP: Logged
