However since the picture doesn't officially open until Wed (02/25) these theatres are being required to report those Mon and Tues special show grosses as part of their opening day figures. When dealing with reported grosses for any picture it is always wise to remember that the movie theatre business invented the whole genre of "creative accounting".  |  IP: Logged Mark J. I think a lot of people will go see it. Then they'll convince their friends to go see it, and they'll go with them. Or they'll want to see it before bringing their children. Some will come back with the kids, some won't, but I think a lot WILL. This movie will do very well. It will make 100 million in a week if not faster, and it will have a nice long run. Those are my predictions, and I'm prepared to be publicly humiliated here in this forum if I'm wrong. Plus, those are the kinds of people who have a habit of going to the movies a lot. If The Passion of the Christ attracts people who don't see movies that often, I just can't imagine those people suddenly acting like Star Wars fan and seeing this movie as many times as they can (and then bragging about it at church). Why would you want to see it again? Because you thought that the special effects were cool? On the other hand, if this movie is so powerful that it touches believers deeply, it disturbs people and the images stay with them for a long time, then why do they need to rush back and watch the movie again? I'm just saying that, as "blockbusters" go, this is a whole different kind of movie. It isn't going to follow the patterns we've come to expect based on the Hollywood hype mechanisms we all know. I remember when the silly Omega Code came out, christian channels on TV were asking viewers to go watch it to make a statement to Hollywood that Christian movies have a huge fan base. If a silly movie like that could earn half decent money at the box office, the idea that churches would be booking theaters for a superior movie like Passion of Christ is not inconceivable. Some churches are probably doing this to make sure this movie gets high grosses in the first week. That's why I couldn't figure out why none of the majors were picking this movie up even indirectly(through their indie studios at least). So too in other parts of Asia and every major Muslim country - is it unusual at all for the President to ask for a special screening ? More reviews are pouring in and like Washington Post commented, this film will become the movie event of America. The numbers for the Wednesday (including the previews), sure, will go over the roof. It will vanish and shrink. ... We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first-rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me." Some say that was in reference to the number of Beatles records selling more copies than the number of people attending church.
