Anecdotal info from two areas:

Just south of Boston, four prints very busy but not selling out.

Albany, six prints selling out frequently.

Draw what conclusions you like...I think it will play out quickly. Most people I have spoke with don't expect it to have any legs.

Business on this film was anything other then ordinary. We had our church showings ... but still had to interlock this thing on up to 5 screens. I have two theatres in urban areas of Atlanta ... and the grosses on this picture (1 print in each theatre) are on par with Bad Boys II (our previous best, where we had 5 prints total).

New Market is adding an additional print at each theater for next week.

I have to agree with Ian. It is an excellent film, (IMHO) but it is a film that you would probably only want to see once. I think it will do well if released on DVD...a film like this I know I would like to have in my archives. I am sure others will feel the same way. Only time will tell.

There's no way this movie will do $400 mil. $200M is a huge maybe. My guess is closer to $175M.

I'm thinking about $250-$275 million.

This thing is going to have legs ... I'm already seeing repeat business...

Observations and estimates by people at Newmarket may provide some indication of what lies ahead for this film

quote :
-------------------------------------------------------------
The film played strongly among all age and ethnic groups and in every region of the country, especially in some Bible belt and heartland cities such as Dallas, Houston and Oklahoma City, said Rob Schwartz, head of distribution for Newmarket. Gibson hired the independent outfit to put "The Passion" in theaters after Hollywood studios shied away.

"The Passion" ultimately could take in between $300 million and $350 million in the United States and Canada alone, Schwartz said.
-------------------------------------------------------------

This, while Newmarket has always had to revise its figures upwards from what they would first announce. This must be the first time ever that they have provided any future estimate for the film.

'Passion' Poised to Continue Reign

I bet they will need to revise this one too - to north of 400 million dollars.

Today was the first day that I did not sell out a feature for Passion. No other film has done that kind of business at this theatre since I've been here.

Because buying DVDs often cost less than renting them, all factors considered.

Hmm. Well, this week we have Hidalgo, Starsky & Hutch, and The Reckoning. I think Lord Of The Rings will probably take more Passion business than any of those three. And I predict Passion will pass 200 Million this weekend.

We'll see! [Smile]

Passion only needs 55 million more to breach the 200 million mark. On Tuesday night, it stood at a staggering 144.7 Million.

I predict by the Sunday night, Passion will clearly breach the 200 million mark, notwithstanding the re-entry of LOTR-ROTK.

Mark: That's why I said MAYBE. (You can get out of a lot of wrong predictions by inserting a 'maybe.') [Big Grin]

Hehe

I know, Mike, I do that all the time! [Smile]

No reason for you to explain it Robert. You didn't say it. And no reason to take it to PM. I'm just not sure what Ian meant by saying it was directly marketed to "super conservative catholics." So it wasn't marketed to just plain conservative catholics? Only to super conservative ones? What does that mean? And does he think that moderate catholics and liberal catholics, and maybe even super liberal catholics weren't targeted either? I would just like a clarification on that and since it was said in this thread, I'd like the clarification to be in this thread too so that anyone who comes along later to read the thread will also have a chance to read the clarification. That's all.

Thanks!
