Since I am in the midst of watching TOS:S1 on blu-ray I am seeing they took a lot of liberties with the character's pasts. To avoid spoiling I will just say that the one thing that really bothered me was a personal relationship between two characters that is being forced and is very much a variation of one of their personalities. This is the kind of unnecessary meddling that I expected to some degree or another. Aside from that it's a great movie. Abram's continued his pattern of "Cloverfield" in starting slow with more character development than necessary though it was not nearly as grating in this picture. Fortunately he allowed his characters to be who we already know them to be. Once it gets going it's very much in the spirit of the original. Even the "old guys" with me (dad and uncle) loved it. The only thing that was totally out of character was the aforementioned "relationship". There's not a lot I have to say except that overall I am pleasantly surprised. I believe Abrams showed a surprising amount of restraint in his re-imagining and I for one appreciate his respect for the material and the fans of the original program.  |  IP: Logged John Wilson Film God Posts: 5438 From: Sydney, Australia. I almost got up and left at a point where the DP wouldn't keep the head shot framed for the sake of God in such a way it was unbearable (frame it ... let it drift to the right, drift, drift, drift, drift, oh, quickly turn left and frame it again, then slowly drift, drift, drift, drift, drift, oh, quickly pan left to reframe again, then let it drift, drift, drift ... WTF?). Thankfully not all movie was this bad. Same with editing. Only some 10 minutes of truly unbearable stuff. Rest wasn't too good, but at least not Oh, and that (spoiler) ludicrous relationship between two characters being slapped to the face. Otherwise, entertaining stuff. 2 out of 5 stars from me, as other technical and entertaining aspects were good. The whole time travel thing would not have affected Spock's life much if at all, but already he was a whiny little punk and kissed girlfriends while on duty even when a human would not. Fuckin' stupid. It was really bad at first.
