Do we need any more evidence that the distributors are running the theatres? "Back in the day" we booked the pictures when WE wanted to play them (after the break) and the distributors had no control over what time we played them. And we'd play films on a 4-3 run (Wednesday through Saturday for one film and Sunday through Tuesday for another).

"Let theaters begin showing this one as early as 7 p.m. on Thursday" is not the same as require. Is Paramount requiring the early showings? Could they even do that if they wanted to?

Yep. I used to work for Fox West Coast Adam. But I was really thinking of the 60s when I owned my theatres.

Robert: You can still do that. We just played "Monsters vs. Aliens" for 6 days, then were closed for our regular Thursday night, then played it 3 more days at one show per day.

Sure... that's called "tradition".

We close on July 4 each year, whether it's on a Friday, Saturday or any other day. It's a well known fact that, around here, few people go to the movies on that day. There are several corporate-funded overwater fireworks displays that people line the streets to see. If we were open, we would get 10 cars, and they would want to set their M-80s off in my fields.

The studios don't say a word about this, even though one would think they'd resist losing a Friday or Saturday. It's a long (22 years) establish pattern at our place.

They are letting the theatres start showing them as early as 7, this does not mean you have to. You could show them at 12am if you wanted. Paramount is helping the theatres by doing this. Anyone who would complain about them allowing you to show this movie earlier then the release is dumb. This movie is a gold mine, and your not getting the shaft here.

Competition is keen in our area, so if Paramount will allow you to start your first show at 7:00, that's what we will be doing. You can't sit around until later and allow your competition to offer the first showings

in our case it's proving quite a hassle. our main auditorium has a long-standing rental for 7pm thurs with 250 tickets sold already. so star trek is opening upstairs on a 180-seat screen, then moving down for the 10pm show.

So what would you prefer them to do? Not allow you to do the 7pm show so that you don't have the hassle (and by inference, don't have the extra ticket sales either)?

As Chris already pointed out, this is not a hassle. Your still going to play it at 7, just not in your larger house. Seems people just want to complain about any little thing that they can about his movie. Even when the word of mouth already is great, and Trekies and non Trekies are giddy over seeing it.

I enjoyed this "news" report from The Onion.

Long-time Star Trek fans complain that the new movie is fun and watchable.

Oops! I see that this "news report" has already been pointed out in the "Random Video Links" thread. But I think it should still be here because it's not so random and it really applies to this discussion.

Maybe not the non-Trekies. Early reports are very few markets even came close to selling out these 7:00 shows.
