I never would've claimed you to be someone who'd say "the original is always the best" because otherwise you wouldn't have said what you did with the Glenn Miller CD.

I just see you as going at this whole thing with blinders on, sending everything said/written on the movie through a filter that only lets you see it in the worst possible light and when something doesn't automatically have a bad viewpoint you come up with a tangentally-related bad thing.

It feels as if you want this movie to fail just so you can point and laugh.

Actually I hope it's great...but I was just getting used to the idea that ST was finally going to rest in peace. This feels to me no different than if a newly formed group came out and called themselves "The Beatles"...and then tried to either re-record Beatle songs or create Beatle-like songs of their own - and then some young whippersnapper starts telling you how much that old music was in need of a "reboot".

Beatles music has been and will be 'rebooted' forever and a day.

Paramount owns Star Trek. It's a valuable commodity for them. Surely they are free to do with it as they please. If they stuff it up, there goes the commodity as a future money spinner. On the other hand, if it goes off like Transformers did for them they'll milk it for a few more years.

It's just business...otherwise Indiana Jones would have been left riding into the sunset with his Dad.

My prediction of the near future: This movie will take in $65 million opening weekend. Its final gross will be $155 million. Not great but a far cry from the disaster of Nemesis. Abrams will shake off the stench of Mission: Impossible III and finally gain a reputation for making big-budget movies which meet studio expectations for grosses. He’ll use this clout to sign a big directing contract. And he'll make more big-budget movies which are, unfortunately, just as derivative as his other work. But he will not direct the next Star Trek movie. Instead, he’ll take a producer’s portion of the gross but he’ll prefer to take even more of a cut so he’ll direct a movie based on something he created himself, like Lost. New fans of Star Trek (who will fall in love with this year's movie) will hate the sequel because it won’t be directed by Abrams and they’ll miss his sensibilities. But nobody’s going to like the big-screen movie version of Lost. However, by then, Abrams will have so much money that he’ll never have to work again… and some of us will hope that he doesn’t.

Of course, I could be wrong.

As good as the movie looks to me, I not so certain on it making a lot of money. Of all the movies, only the 4th one grossed over $100 million. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

It will make $100 million in its first two-three weeks then it will slow down and probably end around $190 million. That would be my guess.

Press screening yesterday morning here in Paris.
I have seen all tv shows and films, and I must say I find this new opus very, very, very enjoyable.
For non-trekkers, it's a fun scifi non-stop action film, but for actual ST fans, it's a gem full of references and a wonderful hommage to the original series.
It's doing much better job at connecting the dots than Star Wars III did (don't take me wrong, I like SWIII).

This always cracks me up, "Oh no, Your opinion on a movie that I don't like or most people don't like means what you have to say about this is wrong." I know John was joking and not being an ass. [Big Grin] Just cracks me up when people say that.

I didn't realize there were dots to be connected. I suppose in a couple of weeks I'll find out how clueless I have been for the past 40 or so years. Actually I am looking forward to the movie. I am taking a day off from work after the first weekend to drag my dad and uncle to see it in IMAX.

Well we have a friend here who thinks "Return of the Jedi" is the best film in the Star Wars series. My mom says Gone With The Wind is "the worst movie ever made". Now there's a couple of people whose opinion I might question.

There are lots of people who would agree. When we played GWTW here a few years ago (that awful Scope print), we had a few people who said it 'wasn't as good as they remembered.'

You'll never get 100% of people to agree on what movie is the best. My own favorite film changes from day to day -- I couldn't even tell you what my very best favorite film of all time is. I like too many.

Mike - maybe that GWTW reaction was in part due to the "quality" of those prints. It's kind of like I was saying in the nitrate fire thread about how better quality picture and sound might subconsciously enhance a viewing experience. Perhaps the opposite is true as well.

As for it being "the worst film ever made" that is simply a ridiculous statement. If you didn't like it that's fine but it's not even arguable that it the worst - or anything close to the worst - film ever made.

I used to have a full-frame 1989 "50th Anniversary" LPP print in my collection. It was quite nice. I understand there are some full frame IB prints made at the same time as the scope ones. I wonder how they look?
