Neff Theatre Dork Posts: 919 From: San Francisco, CA Registered: Oct 1999 posted 12-17-2008 04:42 PM                        Ultimate Computer was kinda boring plotwise, but yeah, I put up with it. It's probably these reasons I enjoy "Mirror Mirror" so much. I'd get super dorky and be "oh man, the doors have the Empire symbol on them, neat." It's also these reasons why I can tolerate going into so many chain theatres to take photos. I have to say, the new trailer (came with Watchmen) looks better than the first one (and I was looking forward to the film after the first one). This new trailer, to me at least, has a little more character to it, and feels a lot more like it's for a Star Trek movie, as opposed to a generic sci-fi/action film that happens to have the Star Trek name on it. This new trailer is pretty awesome, but I think it still agrees with the above statement. It does look like a generic, albeit great, sci-fi action adventure that happens to have the Star Trek name. I think it will be a great movie. Not so sure if it'll be great Star Trek. It's something that everyone can enjoy, fan and non-fan alike. If you've never seen STAR TREK, this is a good starting point. But if you're a fan, it will inevitably offer more depth. I don't doubt your sincerity but, in my circles, there aren't many loyal Star Trek fans left. The biggest fan I know pretty-much never watched the Enterprise series. From where I'm sitting, the problem with Star Trek for the last several years is that the people who are appointed to be "in charge" of each project are too interested in leaving their personal marks on the franchise. Too many incidents of "I've always wanted to see the ship do this" or "I've always wanted character X to do this" or "Let's invent a new alien race" or "Let's rub phosphorescent gel all over the girl." It's satisfying to the person in charge, perhaps, but not a hit with many others... not to mention that it just doesn't feel like "Star Trek" anymore. Every time I hear about this upcoming Star Trek movie, it seems like an endless list of wishes from people who want to "leave their mark" on the franchise. I never got into any of the Next Generation or other spin-offs. I thought Voyager had a great look and excellent story-lines. I happen to be a big fan of anything related to time-travel, and there were plenty of episodes with meaty time-travel themes. But you are right, you'll be hard pressed to find many people who liked Voyager (how could you not like 7 of 9?) I am fairly unique in that I actually never saw the original Star Trek series on TV -- I was working on a farm during that time & watched precious little TV. When I did get to see it some years later, it was after my epiphany of seeing 2001 as the greatest sci-fi film I had ever seen to date; the Star Trek TV series when I did get to see it looked like some amateur high school film class project after that and Shattner just look like a fool. Next Generation made me perk up and take notice (greatest titleing sequence ever and great theme music too) and then came Voyager which I thought was so good that it was worth tapeing every episode so I could watch them after work. And as has been said, Kate Mulgrew evidently rubbed lots of people the wrong way - I have a friend who says he couldn't stand to hear her annoying, gravely voice -- but to me, the captain was a very well written character, complex, well rounded with plenty of depth and I think Mulgrew pulled it off fairly well. I really liked Voyger and hated to see it end. If it ever comes out on BluRay, I may get the whole package. I was not a fan of DS9 at all - it seemed more like a comedy skit -- they never seemed to be serious, and the costumes were laughable more than believeable. And I thought Enterprise had really good potential with competent acting; it just didn't have the ratings and so didn't get the chance to really grow. I think it had a few more good seasons left in it before they killed it. As for this new movie, what's all the pissing and moaning about? It looks like it's going to be as good as many a sci-fi offering to come along in awhile; why does it need to live up to anything else? I'll go and watch it because I like sci-fi and the trailer looked spectacular. They'll get my $10, Star Trek or not.  |  IP: Logged
