Wow, imagine that, now why might I want to go to the "Ultra-cinema" again? After all, I even have D.T.S. out here on two screens. (With Dolby Dig. coming soon on the other. Nice try indoor guys, we'll stick to the drive-ins.

..this area of Idaho is betting three multiplexes, two of them REG "shithouses". A 11 screener downtown Boise, and a proposed 16 plex between Boise and Nampa.

But what was neat though is that REG got their shorts yanked up with an upstart 18 screener being built, close to where the 16 plex is supposed to be built from the Hallett's Cinema people
www.halletcinemas.com out of Washington.

Be interesting on how Hallets will survive around the scum of REG.

Lowes Cineplex has announced that the Cinema 1 (formerly the KB Cinema)- which is advertised as the second largest screen in the Washington DC area after the Uptown- will close as of January 27, 2005.

I have heard that the Riverdale Plaza 12 cinemas in Hampton, VA closed a couple of weeks ago and will be turned into a Cinema Cafe. It was opened by Regal in the mid 90s and sold to a local operator a couple years back.

Here in Wilmington NC Consolidated is having the grand opening of the new 16 plex they built here. I have not been home to go and check it out. I flew home from Memphis for sat and fly back outto Memphis today so there was no time for me to go and see it, but I hear it is beautiful and will certainly give the area a nother choice from Carmike. In Memphis the drive-in is still open and I have hopes of getting over there to check it out.

2 weeks ago I saw the TMI Altamonte 8 Cinema was showing Kinsey. Last week, I called the recording and, "The Altamonte 8 Cinema is no longer operated by [names of people I forgot]. The theater plans to open under new management in the near future. There are currently no movies playing."

Today, the number to the theater has been disconnected.

This was a GCC, next to the Altamonte Springs Mall. About a year ago, AMC built a 18 on the very edge of the mall, literally butting the old 8-plex. Only a small road between them. That road was the "access road" for the 8, which had its back to the main road. (the access road had a small 2x3ft sign "Theatre Entrance") I noticed recently that they have torn up this road to do some construction, so I'm unsure of how to get to the theater at all. Wonder if that coincided with the closing...

So I drove over there today to check it out. Apparently you have to drive "around" the shopping center to get to it now that the access road is closed. Who the hell would build a theater facing the BACK of a shopping center?!? Apparently GCC did...

That's the front. There were 2 box offices, the one you see in front of you, and another one facing outward on the right side.

I guess the reflection in the windows of this box office tell all. The once cheery red ticket station which greeted eager patrons on their way to enjoy the show now faces a scary-looking crane. This is one customer that should be turned away. [Frown]

Well, indoor theatre fans in Detroit will be happy to learn that GM has decided to refurbish and reopen the indoor plex at the Renaissance Center (article below).

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. is bringing Hollywood films back to its Renaissance Center world headquarters, making it the only cinema in downtown Detroit.
This week, GM is scheduled to announce a deal to operate a dormant four-screen movie house in the RenCen, offering cushy armchairs, digital sound and large screens. When it opens later this year, the cinema will be only the second movie theater operating in the city, joining the 10-screen Phoenix Theatres Bel-Air Centre along Eight Mile Road east of Van Dyke.
"There's no question we need more cinemas in Detroit, but having Hollywood films will help all of the restaurants at the RenCen," said Frank Taylor, co-owner of Seldom Blues, a jazz supper club at the RenCen he opened last year with former Detroit Lions star Robert Porcher and musician Alexander Zonjic. "The more dining and entertainment you can offer in Detroit, the better."
Cinema operators bypassed Detroit in recent years because of the city's declining population, limited dining options and difficulty finding available land. But since 2000, downtown Detroit has added more than two dozen restaurants, Comerica Park, Ford Field, three casinos and other entertainment offerings.
"We're making downtown Detroit an entertainment hub to complement our growing residential loft development and office projects," said George W. Jackson Jr., president and CEO of Detroit Economic Growth Corp., a nonprofit development agency. "We're also looking at adding other movie theaters."
GM closed the RenCen movie complex in the late 1990s to help make way for the $500 million renovation of the office, hotel and retail complex.
The automaker said it will select from one of two bidders to operate the theater. The suitors are Phoenix Theatres, which also operates the nine-screen West River Centre in Farmington Hills, and American Family Cinema, which runs a three-screen facility at the Livonia Mall along with drive-in theaters at the Pontiac Silverdome and Compuware Arena in Plymouth Township.
"In addition to the theaters, we're adding a glass sculpture inside our main lobby along with three retailers," said Matt Cullen, general manager of GM's economic development and enterprise services group. Branmar Furs, Scentsations and BonBon's will join more than 40 stores and restaurants at the RenCen.

A few weeks back National Amusements (The evil empire) closed the Showcase Eastgate in Cincinnati Ohio. From what I hear the have played with the idea for awhile, but, told the management on a Friday they will close on the Sunday night.

It's lights out for the CORONET THEATRE here in San Francisco. The last day is 02/13.

..many stories that I've heard about the Coronet and one of them was the grand opening that this palace had with the original "Star Wars" release, in May of 1977.

There were two sets of lines going around the block with patrons waiting to see this flik. Shows beginning at 8am and continuing through the midnight.

They played "Star Wars" in 70mm.

..another movie going dynasty taking the death knell, due to the megaplex conception.

...sad....

Since the customers and retail markets tend to like places that are either in or around large shopping areas, or in suburbia...

One of the higher end theaters in the Southern West Virginia market; Marquee Cinema is operated by someone related to a person who is opening their own multiplex. Marquee has also recently opened a very impressive multiplex in the Huntington area.

The new multiplex is a completely brand new structure located in what is becoming the busiest market and area in the state; just off of route 64 in Putnam county.

Theres also another new suitor in the area. Their company is looking to locate either next to or near a new minor league ballpark in the city of Charleston.

Can anyone also verify that Lowes may also have an interest in opening two very large multiplexes in the state of WV??

There are going to be more changes occuring in the Southern West Virginia market over the course of about one year, than have occured over about the past thirty to forty years. The (in place) existing market will likely have to make some major changes to adapt to the new competition.
