Crist Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 531 From: Hershey, PA, USA Registered: Apr 2000 posted 05-06-2006 10:14 AM                     Yesterday May 5th saw the opening of Frank Theatres (NJ) brand new 10 Plex in Gettysburg PA. This follows the opening of a local developers brand new 8 Plex about three weeks ago. These two plexs are all of about 3 miles apart. Gettysburg recently saw the revival of its old historic downtown theatre by Gettysburg College into a performing arts center (at a reported 18 million dollar price tag) along with an addition of two screens for art movies. This means the sleepy little town of Gettysburg went from an old three screener to 20 new screens in a few months. This building boom appears to have been driven by the hope that the Pennsylvania legistlature would approve a slots parlour adjacent to the Gettysburg battlefield with a boost to local tourism. Opposition from civil war enthusiasts and gambling opponents to the proposed casino has proven loud and forceful and it begins to look like the proposed casino may now not be built.  |  IP: Logged Scott D. I'm sure it's one of those deals where the UA entity pays REG to manage their theatres. It is located on Four Mile Post Road Behind Valley Bend at Jones Farm. What is the resolution of the digital projectors they use? The Regal Hollywood 18 went to all $5 shows a few weeks ago because of the opening of the new theatre nearby. What is very interesting is it seems that the Regal Hollywood 18 and the rave Valley Bend 18, although not far from each other, are not splitting product like Carmike 10 and Regal Madison Square 12 do. People have the choice of going to the new theatre or going to Hollywood 18 and seeing the movie for $5.  |  IP: Logged Mark Lensenmayer Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1605 From: Upper Arlington, OH Registered: Sep 1999 posted 05-19-2006 07:31 AM                     2 of the local Cinemark theatres ( 1-10 screen and 1-12 screen) have apparently moved over to the STARPLEX brand. From all appearances, this is a spin-off from the Cinemark group. Todays newspaper lists these theatres as both Cinemark and Starplex locations. There is even a slight difference in showtimes to make it even more confusing. These locations are early 90's builds without stadium seating. One was the premiere THX site in town (when that meant something) and had the first DTS installation for Jurassic Park. Since then, neither has had any significant upgrades. The 12-plex still has a majority of screens without digital sound. In their current state, they would be my last choice to attend in Central Ohio. The Starplex page is very entertaining. Check this sentence about sound systems: quote: Even our theaters without digital sound are equipped with Ultra*Stereo Surround Sound, a sound experience so intense, you won't know it's not digital! The Royal, the Revue (the oldest still running cinema in Toronto from 1912), and the Kingsway are going for sure by the end of June. The Paridise and the Fox are also closing soon. That just leaves the Bloor. Gordon Mcleod must know these theaters as he posted pictures for most of them in the gallery. This really sucks for T.O. and a sad day for indy cinema. I've been to most of these theatres and they are great neighbor hood single screen houses. It may be a case of the theatres being run down and ill-managed. Someone will wake up and start running a very nice Art-Plex. But Toronto may be in for a bit of an independent cinema drought. All markets have their up moments and their down moments. Probably. All those theatres are in pretty good condition though, with new seats, new silver screens, and good sound setups. You would really have to have the big bucks to take one over though.. The Royal (450 seats) is selling for 2.7 million and the taxes are $30,000 CND a year. I have a feeling it will be come a night club or bar rather then a theatre.  |  IP: Logged Steve Scott Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1300 From: Minneapolis, MN Registered: Sep 2000 posted 05-25-2006 01:00 PM                     AMC seems to have stalled on their Bridges of St. Paul 12-plex & have posted a sign at the Rosedale mall, Roseville, MN, announcing a new multiplex in the old Mervyn's store. Directly across the street is Regal/UA's Pavillions at Crossroads, the only surviving UA vestige to bear their name. With all I've heard about quality there, Pavillion's days will be very numbered once AMC bows. AMC will likely close Har Mar too, which will be a fraction of sadness for the 1-3 portion of St. Paul's first multiplex. The Roseville dollar theater should still do well, seeing as people flock to real butter around here. It was a small art 100 seat art theatre that did movies and live music. Its been a bad spring in Ontraio for rep/art theatres. The Paradise in Toronto is also closing in the next month. This will free up at least five art/indie picture contracts that were previously held for the entire city by Landmark. We at St. Anthony Main are quite excited by this prospect. It's been soooo long since a run of arthouse pictures has played in this, a very arthouse-appropriate neighborhood! The picture I have for my member picture was taken in the booth for Man O War about 6 or 7 years ago. I've been a projectionist/projection manager there with UA/Regal & Marquee, who couldn't/wouldn't pay the rent and were kicked out, and now this is the third time giving it a go. With luck, it'll be good. We're still going to have all of our brand new Strong equipment & all auditoriums blasting in Dobly Digital w/ CP650's. Best equipment I've ever worked with, and the lowest would have to be Lakepointe/Galaxy (I'm sure Brad can vouch for the shittiness of Galaxy).
