Sony Fallout: Carmike Cinemas Won’t Screen ‘The Interview’

Carmike Cinemas has bailed out on showing Sony’s comedy “The Interview.”

The theater chain is the first to take up Sony’s offer to distributors to pull “The Interview” if they want to.

Multiplex owners were caught by surprise Tuesday after hackers evoked the memory of 9/11 while threatening theaters that play the comedy about an attempted assassination of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

The Carmike chain has 2,623 screens domestically.

Considering that Sony is allowing exhibitors to make their own decision, I think if I had a multiplex I would cancel the film, not because of being afraid of violence, but because worried people would likely stay away from my OTHER movies.

I guess with Carmike backing out of its bookings Sony could run an NC-17 cut if they had one on hand (Carmike refuses to book any NC-17 rated content).

All the other chains will follow along very soon including Cineplex in Canada. Smart move IMO as these chains will lose a lot of money if they were to be hacked like SONY.

Cineplex has 4 million customers signed up to their Scene rewards programs, is it really worth getting hacked?

The offer from SONY to allow theatres to not play the film is smart move. Let the authorities figure it all out, its not worth violence at the cinema, and its not worth any cyber attack against Regal, Carmike, Cineplex etc.

Honestly, I think it's a smart move. Besides the possibility there is a credible threat, it opens up the possibility of copy-cats and vigilantes. It creates a situation where people might be inclined to bring their own weapons and act if they see something "suspicious". This could result in any number of possibilities.

Not to mention there is the possibility this could keep people away from other movies. In the interest of public safety, I think it's best to just not show the movie.

Giving in to "terrorist demands" will create some *very* dangerous precedents.

Yeah, you can ask yourself the question: Wouldn't it be better to be safe than sorry. But once you start giving in this way, people know how to hurt you.

Given how this world works nowadays, you'll become a victim of a whole legion of lunatics following suit rather soon.

Cowards. Are they going to do this everytime some outfit issues a threat? You just motivated this group to do more stuff once they get a power trip out of this.

Businesses have traditionally had a much lower risk-appetite than governments when it comes to these sorts of things. I remember just after 9/11 there were 'unspecified threats' against malls in general relating to Halloween trick-or-treating. GGP canceled trick-or-treating at all its malls that year, including the one where I worked in Eau Claire, Wisconsin - population 70,000. Definitely a major terrorist target. They didn't reinstitute trick-or-treating until just a few years ago.

Bow Tie Cinemas and Arclight Cinemas have now joined the list of chains that won't be showing "The Interview."

They're not worried about being hacked. They're worried about people staying away from their other movies, is all.

Why don't you think they are worried about being hacked? The damage that could caused by hacking Regal would be huge. I agree the other movies as well but hacking of the company must be of concern.

Well I guess I shouldn't have said they're not worried about being hacked.....after all, EVERYBODY is worried about being hacked.

I'm just saying I don't think that's why these chains are cancelling the movie, or at least it's not the biggest reason.

I wonder if Chinese Multi Cinema (AMC) will drop it under pressure from their new owners.

The best thing Sony could do is get out of them movie bidness. The projector bidness and the camera bidness. Just go back to making transistor radios again. The trinitron is all done alright!

I'm just Mr. Armchair PR agent here, but the best thing Sony could do in my opinion is to give the movie away for free. Whatever they spent on this is just peanuts compared to what this whole episode will cost them in the end anyway.

Put the whole damn thing on YouTube, give the DCP away for free to the theaters and give it to broadcasters in return for some advertising slots.

Not only are you pointing your middle finger squarely at the hackers, you're also making a big statement that you're not supporting impediment of free speech and right of expression by a bunch of morons. You will also not succumb to some lowly form of extortion. While you're at it, you might also get some credibility back in the eyes of the rest of the world, because I have the hunch it will do more good to your image than hiring some bad ass lawyers and threatening to sue everybody who only touches your once internal secrets with a ten mile pole.

I hope Cinemark drops it along with Carmike. That'd probably allow us to pick up the film here in town. We'd love to play it up despite not usually booking this kind of movie as a big fuck you to the "terrorists" out there.
