Majority of work is keeping the house (single screen @ 1700shows/year + some odd 200 events) running, maintaing the goodwill and general happiness of my group of 3 projectionists, dealing with projects of national and local importance (digitization of exhibitors, digitalization of film archives, changes in distribution workflow...), running extra outdoor venues every day for 2 months in summer, reading film-tech at 1am in the morning,... (And everyone else.) Looks like this is the place to do introductions, so here is my piece. As you can see my name is Frank Cox and I own and operate the Melville Theatre in Melville, a town of about 5000 people in Saskatchewan, Canada. I actually made this theatre -- there was no theatre in Melville at all for about 15 years before I moved here, bought a vacant building that was formerly a paint and wallpaper store, and started renovating. My theatre opened in 1995 and I've been here ever since. Melville Theatre is a single-screen. My latest big event was that I took out the 35mm equipment and installed digital cinema here during the first week of this month (April 2011). Big upgrade -- I replaced everything including the entire sound system; now I have digital cinema with Real D and 5.1 sound. Quite a change from what I had here before, and this is currently the only digital cinema on this side of the province. I really don't know what else to say here but I'll be glad to reply to any questions or comments. I'm really looking forward to hanging around here -- looks like there are a lot of really knowledgeable people here and I'm sure I'll be learning a lot!  |  IP: Logged Robert E. Just search for "melville theatre melville sask" and it takes you straight to my front door, or at least it did. As for interior I don't know if it would be appropriate to post any photos here. My name is Julie, and I'm currently working as the head (and really the only) projectionist at a 10 screen theater in Aberdeen, WA. I am 32 years old and have been working for Coming Attractions Theatres (yeah, that's how they spell it) for a year and 2 months now. Got bumped up from concessions to booth after about 3 months and took over the booth 3 months after that when the other projectionist left. The 3 assistant managers and the GM also run the film while I'm not working, one of them has pretty decent booth knowledge. After a day of training I was chucked into running booth all alone and have basically had to learn just about everything except threading the movie, running the movie and building/tearing down the movie all by myself. Lately I've been digging through all of our spare/random/old equipment that's been lying around and attempting to figure out what it is, what it does and how to use it correctly. My discovery of our 2 Kelmar film cleaning systems lead me through Kelmar to Film-Tech's forums. Yay! Grizzled projectionist veterans! Just what I'd been looking for. I love this job, even though it doesn't pay much of anything and it'll probably be going away if we ever do switch to all digital as they keep promising. My main goal is to improve the way things are done upstairs and protect the quality of the film and the presentation of it. To do that I need to ask questions. Sadly, in order to access anyone in our company with the information I need, I have to jump through email hoops and usually don't get to see the reply that might come back. So I'm truly hoping you guys will be able to help me out. I found the manual warehouse, and once I figure out what we're using I'll be spending quite a bit of time in there. All of our manuals seem to be hiding or long gone. Much of what I need to know isn't in manuals though. Stuff like, "What is the proper stuff to clean the sound head drum in the projector with?" Basic projectionist stuff. Would it be okay to start my own thread somewhere here (and where would be the most proper?) just for asking the questions that I have? A general help for Julie thread? I'm in Medford, OR and was in CAs home office in Ashland when I was thinking of working for them. Most of the guys here are very helpful so feel free to ask any questions you please. It's a wonderful business and CA is growing. They just opened a new house in Alaska. So, let me just say: You've come to the right place... I'd bet that a lot of your questions have already been asked/answered in here already, so make friends with the search tool! And note that you will get different results depending on which forum you ask it to search inside. If you don't find answers by doing a search then you should go ahead and start a new thread for each question. If you bundle all of your questions into one single thread then it's going to render that thread useless to future searchers. Also check out the forum rules on topic/subject headlines. They have to provide a specific preview as to whatever issue the thread actually deals with. Going digital doesn't *have* to represent the end of your career. We're still pretty much at the beginning of the overall conversion. You'd be getting in at the ground floor along with everyone else in your theatre. Just a thought... I'm gonna do my best with the search tool, I'm just afraid that with my limited knowledge of terminology I'll miss something I shouldn't. I'm gonna try to avoid being a pest as much as possible. As far as going digital, my company has pretty much already told me that unless I'm an assistant manager at that point I'll be going back to concessions. The assistant managers will be able to run the digital part they say. They also told me they want to keep me as a projectionist as I do a gosh darn good job of it.. so I'm kinda trapped. I have never regretted setting mine up, and have exactly zero intention of shutting it down, as long as people keep coming in the door. I really can't imagine a better lifestyle than owning a theatre in a small town. Of course, there is the old saying about being in business: The best thing about having your own business is that you do everything your way. The worst thing is that you have to do it yourself.  |  IP: Logged
