I currently have a daft job title - Head of Technical Operations - but essentially I am the Sound & Projection Engineer/Manager at City Screen Ltd, UK. We have 20 Picturehouse Cinemas in England and Scotland - ranging from The Duke of York's in Brighton, the oldest cinema in continuous use in the UK, to our brand new Hackney Picturehouse in East London. I have been in this position for about two years, and spent about eighteen months assisting and learning from my predecessor before that. Previously, I spent a decade or so as a projectionist with Odeon, ultimately spending five years at Odeon Guildford as Chief Technician. We did some early work with Sony on their 4K SXRD machines there; at the time, we thought they were going to take our feedback on board and modify the equipment. From what I can gather, it was all ignored, and the whole exercise was just a PR stunt! What can I say - we tried! Anyhow - I was lucky enough to get out of Odeon before it REALLY stopped being any fun, and into engineering positions with City Screen, where I quickly discovered that I knew far less than I ever realised. A long time ago, I had spells in student cinema, and in an independent Art House (ironically enough now part of Picturehouse), where I got to do all sorts, including 70mm, Super 16, live shows, and some bits and pieces of video (well, it all seemed very exotic in the mid-90s!). I was recently mildly alarmed to pass 20 years in cinema... Im Taylor W. from Nashville TN. I have worked in retail and entertainment industries since 2006. I have an office job at a 4-star place in Nashville. Ive never worked at a theatre but I know several people who have, so I have some basic knowledge of positions in and around the theatre. I love the theatre and really try to go when I can. I'm an engineer at USL. I work on the design of the sound processors, IR equipment, including closed captioning, and pretty much anything with a microcontroller in it. I'm most certainly a nobody in the film industry. I don't even handle films !!! Here's the looong story: My career was in the professional audio industry working variously as an acoustical consultant, electro-acoustic system designer, and with equipment manufacturers as in-house technologist and technical writer (among many other chores!). The companies I worked for included JaffeHolden consultants, Joiner-Rose Group consultants (now defunct), TOA electronics, Community Professional Loudspeakers, and Eastern Acoustic Works. About 4-1/2 years ago I retired from the latter company to my life-long vacation spot in the Pemaquid Point area of Maine. Film became a serious part of my life about a year ago. Our local theater is a small (270 seat), non-profit, multi-purpose house built as a "community hall" in the 1870s. It came under a new directorship with the goal of injecting new life into this falling-into-neglect community resource. I volunteered my expertise and services to whip the technical aspects of the theater into shape. These include systems for theater, public address, concert PA and, (you probably guessed it) video and 35 mm film. As a struggling non-profit there has been little money to do this, but I'm pretty good at creating something with very little -- especially when I get to call the shots and do most all of the labor Having only passing knowledge of cinema technology, I knew I needed a thorough and detailed crash course. In no time I discovered Film-Tech to be the best resource by far. The expertise and knowledge available here about the nuts and bolts and art of projection is not only incredibly impressive but has been invaluable to understanding cinema presentations from the provider/operator points of view. THANKS TO ALL!! While the visual side of things were in decent shape, the audio side was a total disaster even though the equipment was first-rate. That has been largely fixed but with stuff still to do. (A music professor and life-long lover, teacher, player, and conductor of opera told me the audio for the Met Live performances is now "stunning.") I have now been volunteered to oversee upgrading (we have a donor) from 35 mm to D-cinema I may have questions... I will likely never be a projectionist, but what I can do is use continuing new-found knowledge from Film-Tech and my own expertise to provide our projectionists with the systems they need achieve top-notch results. The bottom line is, if my neighbors (we take that word seriously around here) are going to spend their hard-earned money in this theater, they deserve the best. By 2007 I was a projectionist at an older site, projectors dated 1989. Within a year I was head projectionist/booth manager/repairman. I found this site and it was much more helpful than most anyone at Cinemark ever was. I was lucky enough to work with FT equipment at 2 Studio Movie Grills here in the DFW area (while still working for Cinemark, heh heh heh). Once digital took over and hours/positions were cut, I moved into the corporate support side for Cinemark. Why, I'm no one affiliated or involved with cinema.. at least, not yet. What am I am is a lover of movies and the cinemas that show them. I can't abide bad presentation, which explains why I have my own little one-man "cinema" in a 9' x 11' room. A place where I control the presentation. Sure, it's 720p only, and BluRay / DVD for source -- but no digital audio dropouts, no splices, no reel 3 upside down... no people with phones lighting up the auditorium.. it's a proper little cinema. More on that in a separate post. I've been lurking here for a few years now, on and off. Bad presentation and how to fight it is how I came across this place. Film-Tech has given me lots of good info just from reading old posts. Sadly most of that info only confirms my suspicion.. the only moviehouse around here that knows WTF they're doing is a sub-run close to my house.. o.O Louie Gonsalves Systems Engineer / Administrator in Tamarac, FL. I just joined the site (November 2012). Film is in my blood. My father did aerial photography for the Red Cross long ago, and my maternal grandfather did large-format photography. I grew up in a house with a custom-built darkroom, which was a playground for me. I have always been interested in film, as an avid viewer and as a projectionist. I started working for United Artists at the Annex 7 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1993. I started working on the floor, but in less than a year I was assistant manager and projectionist. I worked at a few other theatres in Tulsa, all United Arists', until they were locally bought out by Hollywood Theaters. My favorite years were spent at the United Artists/Hollywood Promenade 4, later expanded to 12. Despite my love of working with film I left the career behind after the politics of the "new" company left a foul taste in my mouth. Not long after leaving I had become disabled and was unable to work, as of 2001. My love of film still continues. Thanks to the internet I try to keep up with current trends (the death of 35mm is something I mourn). I also tend to my personal collection of antique home projectors, cameras and film. So in a way I still am a projectionist. I've lurked on the forum for quite a while and decided to contribute a few posts. I work in higher education as a staff member and have been a long-time film buff. I majored in Public History in college and specialized in studying media history and preservation. In my spare time, I shot some feature-length video documentaries in the 1990s. Lately, I've put quite a bit of work into collecting and restoring radio transcriptions - 16" discs of radio programs from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. These do have a connection with film - it's the same format used for Vitaphone type discs from the early sound era. I've got one in my collection for a lost short. I live about 2-3 hours north of Sydney. I am a Cinema Manager and Digital Technician of a 4 screen complex. I'm 25, been in the industry for 10 years. Projectionist @ 18, head projectionist and cinema supervisor @ 21, cinema manager @ 22. Started with a complex full of 35mm Century projectors, oversaw the digital conversion and have since completed training with Christie, Barco and Dolby.
