Hi, I'm 27 years old and work as a projectionist at Waverley Cinema, a small family owned 4 plex, seating for all 4 is a grand total of 371. We are a second run house and do quite well even when stuff is on video, our oldest film at the moment is Green Mile and the newest Perfect Storm, also run some arthouse. I've been doing this for 10 years, we have 4 projectionists and are a very labour intensive operation, recently we had 20 different titles all screen on the one day so lots of print moves, build ups, break downs and we pull out our film ads after each screening for the next show. Every screen is automated and we have Dolby EX so we're not exactly behind the times.

PaulWhy do you need to change out ads between prints and sessions? That's a bit odd... ...or maybe I just misunderstood you.

This may be complicated to explain but here goes,Val Morgan only sends us one copy of each film add. A particular film title may play once, twice or not at all on a certain day so we cant leave the adds on it. We split our available adds into 4 groups Cin 1 A and B, Cin 2 A and B, no adds in 3 or 4. When a show is running we remove the adds from the previous one and put them on the next one, it sounds confusing but here is an example (not a current day)
Cinema 1
Erin Brockovich 10.30 am Add set A
Keeping the faith 1.00 pm Add set B
Dinosaur 3.30 pm Add set A
Perfect storm 6.00 pm Add set B
MI2 8.30 pm Add set A
Then put sets A and B on tomorrow mornings shows.
In the meantime I am running three other screens and maybe building up a couple of prints as the day shift is the manager and he doesn't have time. We only have one projector per booth so changeovers is not an option, plus I would probably be somewhere else at the crucial time as we have 3 projection rooms. To move film within a booth we have hydraulic trolleys to push around and between booths have a homemade thingamigig. We keep the centre ring from our Specos in the film and then sandwich it between two wooden discs and bolt them together. Thankfully we dont go between booths that much. Oh and to make things more interesting Cinema 3 and 4 both run off the same 4 deck platter and the same movie never replays straight after it has finished so we have to take it off and put the new one on between shows. This is not as bad as it seems because the storage is very close to the platter, just annoying. John, the Americans are always complaining they only get short leaders, recently I've been getting quite a few prints with long leaders in excess of 100 ft, what do I need all that for? Cheers Paul

This is not really on topic, but here is a list of films we showed today at our 4 plex;
Buena vista social club, American beauty, Story of us, Erin brockovich, Music of the heart, Green mile, Angela's ashes, Keeping the faith, Gladiator, MI2, Topsy turvy, Dinosaur, Perfect storm, Gone in 60 seconds, Dinner game, U 571, Looking for Alibrandi, Cider house rules.
Yep thats 18.
We also have The Insider and Snow falling on cedars but they didn't screen today.

Hello, my name is Charles Lubner, and I work for the Marcus Theatres Corp. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have been working for Marcus 3 years as of last week. Currently I'm an assistant manager at the Northtown Cinemas, responsible for building maintenance, which includes ordering parts for the booth. I learned how to project at the Rivoli Cinema in Cedarburg on a Simplex XL 1014 with CFS platters and an RCA Photophone soundhead. At the Northtown we have mainly Pro35's, with 1 Brenkert and 1 Century JJ 35/70. My interests include old movie theatres and their history, taekwondo, and art. I'm a graphic design major at UW-Milwaukee. I know Cory Johnson and John Scott from this site, and have talked to Aaron Sisemore and Dustin Mitchell via email several times. I really enjoy film-tech, and cannot thank Brad and Ken enough for all of the manuals on here. I've downloaded a bunch and learned all kinds of stuff from them. Thanks guys!!

Hi. I'm in a manager/Projectionist/Hire-Fire/Inventory/Fixsmallstuff/cleanwhenneeded/dopaperwork type of position. Worked here from 94 to 98, then wife wanted me to a day job, so worked day shift at a parts counter at an Impliment Farm Dealer. Person who took over for me at the theater quit in July(she was going to leave one way or the other  ) so they called me up wondering if I wanted to come back with a small raise. I said OK. Less stress at the theater than the parts counter, and enjoyed the movies more. Not much entertainment looking at farm parts, even though I grew up on a dairy farm. When I returned a month ago, it was a disaster waiting to happen. She had done nothing in 2 years except let things run down. My wife will be glad when I don't have to run in and fix and clean every morning and do my "normal" work at night.But I AM glad to get back.
We have a 5 plex in a mall(expanded from 2 to 5 Oct 97, I was there..it was fun)with Strong x-90 lamphouse and simplex 35 heads, a xetron 5 deck platter, one strong 3 deck, and 2 Speco 3 deck platters. One Dolby Digital cp500 in big old house, Ultra stereo in medium new house, mono in 3 middle houses. Gotta go, baby need bottle...my turn to feed. Lots of fun. Later ------------------
