Well, I opened one of my two jars of this stuff the other day. Holy shit -- this is uber-horrific. I mean you might as well be tongueing a salt lick that's been dipped in bitter yeast. It is gawd-awful! Anyone want my other unopened jar, just let me know; it's yours.

The stuff never goes bad. It will last pretty near forever. You have a while to decide whether you hate it.

Unless you grew up on it, you will probably hate it the first time you taste it. But it can grow on you if you try.

Don't use too much of it. Spread THIN!
Try it on a piece of toast with lots of butter.
It goes well with cheese. And, strange as it sounds, peanut butter goes well with it too.

It's usually a "Love it or hate it" reaction.
In fact, the ad campaign for Marmite is actually "Love it or Hate it."

John.

It is sad that I fail the "Call Yourself an Aussie" test.

I haven't set foot inside the M.C.G on Boxing day either! Ohhh, the shame.

In answer to your unasked question "What does a dog-fart taste like?".....well it's obvious really..

....like Vegemite : [beer] [beer] [beer]

Not at all...you can proudly call yourself an Aussie (just don't say anything against Vegemite.) [Big Grin]

Are you guys sure this Vegemite thing isn't just a nationalized hazing ritual of some kind?

Yeah, one day a bunch of Aussies were hanging out putting away a few beers. They were all liquored up and along comes this American guy. So they poured a few beers down his gullet and got him nice and sloshed. Then they proceeded to dream up the nastiest, foul tasting concoction they could dream up and tried to get him to eat it. All the boys pretended they liked it and even practiced eating it with a straight face just so they could convince the poor foreigner that people from Down Under really do eat that crap.

They thought it was so funny that they told their friends about it and those guys told their friends too. Before long Vegemite became a national prank to be played on any unsuspecting foreigner that happened to come along.

Before long, companies sprang up just to produce tons and tons of this stuff just so every Aussie could keep a jar of it on the shelf at the back of their cupboards so that it would always be at the ready when an American guest might stumble into their midst!

That's the only possible reason I can think up for the existence of this stuff!

Frank, I'll take it. I've been wondering about this stuff for a long time.

I wonder if it's really a joke... they actually hate it in Australia, too, but make the rest of the world curious about it - while in reality they're ROFL behind our backs! [Razz]

EDIT: Wow. Randy, I just read your post (I'd posted quickly after seeing Frank's offer)... we had the same idea!

I enjoy a little bit of vegemite on toast in the morning, but I wouldn't eat it every meal of every day. Remember, you have to spread it really really thin.

John

Don't forget you are talking to the ones who do not know the metric system.

So the 1mm Tick translates in to 0.0393700787 inches thick.

Tim: Sam's Club has Knotts Pimento Cheese. Wouldn't you think all stores would stock it?
Thanks, Louis. I know the Walmarts here don't carry the same items as they do there (my brother gets a great biscuit gravy mix in Winchester that they only say, 'Huh?' to when I ask about it in Allentown). I don't think I can get into Sam's, anyway -- you have to be a member, don't you? I doubt they would have an incentive to carry it, as no one here really knows what pimento cheese is. They grow up with Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine here, and pimento cheese isn't on the menu. The other predominant culture here is Puerto Rican -- and it's really foreign to them!

Thanks, John, I'll do that. Might as well dive right in. And butter, too, right?

Nonsense. This is the film business, it's already metric. And packages in our stores show metric equivalents (e.g., we buy 2-liter sodas). We just don't use the metric system in manufacturing or for driving. [Wink]

I'm not gonna die from eating this stuff, am I? [Razz]
