The package arrives, courtesy of Frank Angel (who also sent a very nice gift from his theatre along with the product). I appreciate it, Frank! My son, Brett, was with me when the package arrived. He knew about Vegemite, too, and was eager to give it a try. As soon as we opened the jar, Brett said, "It smells like chocolate." And, it did, so that was promising. Diving right in, we took a spoon and sampled a small portion directly. Brett wanted to be first. Well, the pictures tell the story... Nnnnope. He didn't like it at all! Too salty. Then, it was my turn. First, a little sniff to test the waters... Since I like salt on nearly everything, I actually found Vegemite not bad... and went for another taste. Indeed, it is unique, and leaves a bit of an aftertaste that I can't quite put my finger on. However, I soon prepared it as suggested, on toast with butter, and it was pretty good! While I do understand how some can say it's an acquired taste, it shouldn't take me long to acquire it. Umm-umm! Caveat: I'm an' ol' country boy, raised on highly flavorful down-home Kentucky cuisine, so what might taste good to me, others may consider very powerful.  |  IP: Logged Frank Angel Film God Posts: 5305 From: Brooklyn NY USA Registered: Dec 1999 posted 12-20-2009 07:09 AM                        Postlude: I kept the jar by my desk, not feeling good about throwing it out -- it's food after all -- but thinking I would not touch it ever again. Then one night I was working late and was really hankering for some kind of a snack. There was the Vegemite, and so I got a plastic spoon and scooped just a bit up and licked it away. Not as bad as the first time. And you have to admit, it LOOKS so appetizing -- like a big jar of smooth, soft,chocolate or chocolate frosting. BeforeI realize it, I was spooning out the stuff and kind of slowly licking and, waddayakno, I am liking it. Not wildly liking it, but the jar will probably be gone in time. I guess Randy is right -- it does grow kinda on you. Mind you, if I had a jar of almost anything else sitting there (chocolate frosting, for example), The Vegemite would remain untouched; but it seems that if the Vegemite is all that's handy, I down it with less and less trouble. And I am spooning it out, not spreading on toast, which I imagine would mute the saltiness a bit more. It's not critical what kind it is as long as it has enough flavor to stand up to the Vegemite. Dubliner cheese might be good. Put a thin slice of cheese on top of a piece of sourdough bread and top with Vegemite. It's pretty good! For those who haven't been around long enough to remember, when you originally opened this thread, the jingle started automatically and it was rather hard to shut it down. I'll let you know how it goes... ----------------------- VEGEMITE-flavoured chips are about to hit supermarket shelves in the latest gamble by the great Aussie brand. After nine months of secret taste testing, Smith's Chips and Kraft hope they've perfected the crinkle-cut chip that tastes like the beloved black spread. The combination creates a buttery-tasting chip with a tangy Vegemite aftertaste - but will it be a winner? Or will it be dismissed as mimicking the taste of stale Vegemite sandwiches? A Sunday Herald Sun taste test conducted yesterday had a mixed reaction. Lauren, 9, said: "They're good. I like Vegemite and they taste just like it. "I eat Vegemite on toast for breakfast and in my sandwiches for lunch. If you like Vegemite then they are good." But Stanley, also 9, was not convinced. "You can tell the flavour is Vegemite. I don't really like Vegemite so they are OK. I would give them five out of 10." The limited-edition chip goes on sale next month. The idea for a Vegemite-flavoured chip was hatched at Coles headquarters in Glen Iris, where product developers brought Kraft and PepsiCo executives together to create the fast-food match. Smiths had already come up with wacky flavours like Heinz Big Red and pizza. They also produced a limited-edition gravy flavour after a national campaign by Fox radio stars Hamish Blake and Andy Lee to find the people's chip. A national marketing campaign for the Vegemite flavour is ready to roll out later this month. If the chip succeeds, it will be good news for Vegemite brand managers after one of the nation's biggest marketing debacles - iSnack 2.0. Kraft ran a competition to name a new cream cheese version of its famous spread in 2009, plucking iSnack 2.0 as the winner from more than 48,000 entries as a publicity stunt. But public uproar forced a name change only days later to Vegemite Cheesybite. Vegemite remains one of Australia's most popular foods, with more than 22 million jars sold each year, all produced at Kraft's Port Melbourne plant.
