Good stuff.  |  IP: Logged Tuomas Merila Film Handler Posts: 4 From: Oulu, Province of Oulu, Finland Registered: Nov 2007 posted 12-12-2007 03:12 PM                        Here comes my first post - I guess this is the best possible thread for it... so, in addition to reporting my non-US-ness I'll tell a bit about myself and the place I come from as well. So, for starters - I'm Finnish, more precisely from the town of Oulu in northern Finland. This is about the fifth or so largest town in Finland (I don't know what the current exact figure is) with about a little less than 150000 inhabitants. I really don't do projection or other movies related work for living, being employed full time as a computer programmer. I'm, however, very interested in movie technology as long as it remains distant enough from working with computers - meaning that when there is no more film to project in this world, I'm also probably going to visit movie theatres just as a paying customer any more. That, however, is still (I believe) more than decade away so I will be around for quite a while more... Anyway, since I don't work regularly with projection or film technology, my experience with the field comes mostly from temporary booths set up for festivals as well as seldom used booths that usually only come alive for festival screenings or other special events. I got started with this stuff about five years ago when a friend, who was working as a projectionist, agreed to train me with basic projector operation and film handling skills. After being trained my first more-or-less regular film activity was running shows for the local film club using a portable 35mm projector - a thing that I also did do until about a year ago when that club went inactive and has remained that way so far. After getting started with the portable, I got enchanted by this field of work and more and more entangled into it By now I spend at least about a week or two every year as a projectionist on different festivals and also do some random projection gigs here and there when I'm asked to. Also, for the past four years I've been more or less responsible of the technical wellbeing of one projection booth that is not used by anyone else than one festival I'm involved with - once a year, for a couple of days only. Me or the festival don't really own the booth but since its actual owner doesn't have any use for it - its regular screenings ended more than 15 years ago - its up to the festival (and me) to see that everything still works. And mostly it does, although the equipment in the booth is largely original, dating from mid-1950s - except for a recent exchange of the oringal monophonic sound and tube amplifier to a slightly more modern dolby system for this years festival... Anyway, since for some reason most projectors around here seem to be Cinemeccanicas, I've mostly worked with them - more precisely, I have experience on Victoria models IV/E, 5 and 12 plus the portable version of the last, Portacine. Apart from the Victorias, I have been running films on an Ernemann 15 on some festivals too. Also, some 16mm machines but they are hardly worth mentioning separately. Ok, I guess this is enough ranting for now. At the local community cinema I work in the booth and do whatever needs to be done... A couple of years ago I spent a year in Faribault, MN and did a couple of trips through several states of the US. We've recently upgraded 10% of the screens to 2K and more are coming along. We only get 20 digital titles per year here so that doesnt really help. Anyway, it has gone up to around 60 titles so a decision is subjected to be made in ShoWest. We've won an award 3 years ago from ShoWest and something 5 years ago in CineAsia. If you guys are ever in Thailand, just drop me a message and I'll be very happy to show you around our theaters.
