The normal way is to thread straight down. However there is absolutely nothing detrimental to the film or the equipment to thread "behind" the rollers like is shown in that picture. Personally, I always thread straight down just like any standard platter threading. However the reasoning I have been given for threading "behind" the rollers is that it is quicker to whip the film behind them. What does that save, a second??? Regardless, it just doesn't matter.

Anyone who does not check out the Mann Highland 1 & 2 Theater pics currently on the front page can not be qualified as a human being. Only someone with no rights, no intelligence, and no saavy would miss these pics. These are the best pics on Film-Tech. If you do not check them out, then you do not deserve to be alive.

Sigh... I guess I'll have to wait and see these when they come off sneak, as I just can't seem to think of anything worthy of posting, and I can't bring myself to post for posting's sake, like I'm doing right now. [Big Grin]

According to the manual, you thread like this:

 -

The Speco LP-270 is sure an ambiguous platter. [Smile]

Nate, I will assume it doesn't matter, just as long as you thread on the '9'. If it were up to me I'd go in front of one roller and behind the other depending on what day it was or how the weather was outside.

Oh, and Jon.... your first assumption was correct.

The only times that I've threaded to the left of the rollers is when I was having static problems and the two layers of film (going down and coming back up) were attracted to and rubbed against each other or the tree.

I see nothing wrong with threading this way so long as the rollers spin freely. This may also slightly (unnoticeably?) increase tension between the platter and projector.

Joe...the ghostwriter? [Smile]

Now, if an oddball print arrives with a SMPTE Universal leader, does that mean the projectionist is automatically fired? [evil]

Dig that marquee at Movies 10! They're encouraging people to wait for "Ghetto Tuesday". [Big Grin]

Damn, I look like a reanimated corpse in the first pic of the Film-Tech Halloween gathering pics. Brad, don't you think you could have picked a frame where my mouth was closed? I am obviously mid-word. [Smile]

It's a lot like when people hear their own voice on tape for the first time. They're never happy about it.

That's just how you look, dude. [Big Grin]

I've always wandered how you thread on the "7" or on the "9"... Is this feet or the number on a countdown leader? Or does it not matter with automations the way they are today? How do you properly thread a show (what number and how) so that it becomes a true presentation?

Andrew -- this would have been a great question for the FHF.

If you are using an automation that is based on physical cues then it isn't so much of an issue as long as you provide enough time for the motor to come up to speed. In this case, you would need to work out where to insert the cue in relation to the "First Frame of Action" or "FFOA." This kind of automation can provide *very* precise show starts.

Another type of automation uses a one-button "auto-start" routine that is based around a series of timed relays. If you're using one of these, you'd have to know what the delay setting is and thread accordingly. The actual threading point in the leader could vary between projectors due to variances in motor ramp-up speeds. For instance, a motor that gets up to speed quickly may need to be threaded at "8" whereas a motor with a slower start could need to be threaded at something like "7."

As you already guessed, tho numbers refer to those printed on the countdown leader.

No ... you were all in awe of the servers being violated. Lots of things were violated that week. Besides, Joe's mouth is always open anyway. [Razz]

Manny, I've seen many pics of me, and that's the worst. Brad chickened out and didn't put the pic I took of him up.
