Note that I was just making fun of Brad, not questioning his statement that emulsion-out winding is better. Personally, I haven't seen much difference. Anyway, I store film (both acetate and polyester...don't have nitrate, thankfully) heads-out, emulsion-out for convenience and haven't had any problems.
Still, as the relief guy for several different booths, I hate hate hate nonstandard things like backwards-spinning takeups. They may make a marginal improvement in presentation quality, but at the expense of thoroughly confusing any non-regular operator who runs the booth. This obviously isn't an issue in Brad's screening room (for the most part).
If and when I have my own screening room (which will be soon if all goes well), I will run in standard "S-wind" configuration (emulsion out on feed reel and emulsion in on takeup reel).

It's potentially a fair criticism, Brad. We don't run long engagements. On the other hand, we do have some film that we keep around tail-out emulsion-in polyester, but not very much, and not frequently run: generally shorts. They do not appear to show winding problems. Though in in Kodak's work with triacetate, focus stability improved with the number of runs. I would expect that to be true for polyester as well, even if it is more slow.
You seem to stop short of a hard statement, though. Have you seen winding deformation on 2000' reels? Has anyone?
As for focus instability, of course the question is not so much "is it there or not", but "how much is there?". With lenses of sufficient depth-of-field, presumably you can miss significant potential focus issues. So the scientific way to run this experiment is to find some way to measure focus error precisely and then compare both orientations on a system that can see them.
John P., can you comment on the Preo/Yavitz measurement methodology? I was particularly disappointed that not only did they elect to not include the numerical ordinate-axis data, they did not really discuss how they measured focus shift. I suppose a measuring microscope might also be a useful tool here.
Is there any chance of encouraging someone at Kodak to repeat the work with current ESTAR base films? Or has that been done and just not published?
