It took me about 6 weeks to get it where it is now. 6 jets and 8 carb pulls later....This bike absolutely sucks as far as carb work is concerned. You have to pull the rear fender, the battery and air box to get the carbs out. I looked at jet kits, but they appear to be just as much hassel as buying the jets and shimming the needles yourself. I've managed to become a decent mechanic me thinks, although I managed to pick up another expensive hobby Just wait till I start thinking about track racing it is pricy, but if your gonna do it, do it right.... Changing out a sprocket is quick cheap and easy way to get your power where you want it. Personally, I prefer bikes that ride smooth on the highway at high speeds. So, I get smaller rear sprockets to make the engine run smooth at those speeds. get a smaller rear sprocket if you want all your power at a low RPM, goo dif you dont do much highway riding. You may find yourself losing a lot of the get-up-and-go that the bike has. BTW Chris, I think the record for these little guys is 38 HP, after really expensive engine work like porting, bigger pistons, and cams. a motor like that is probably worth more than the bike new! Some people will increase the size of the front sprocket by a tooth or so to lower cruising RPM, usually with minimal loss in 'launching torque'. it drops engine rpm from 9K to like 7.5K at 80 MPH. I took it down from a 41 tooth to a 36. It runs 80 at about 5k rpm down from 7 or 7.5. It was an abandoned repair from the dealer I worked for. I totally rebuilt the engine, forks, etc. but didn't get to finish the cosmetic work. This bike's engine was amongst the first of Yamaha's five-valve per cyl. Genesis motors. The recommended valve adjustment interval was 26,000 miles!! Most bikes need it at 3,000 or 6,000. I put over 42,000 miles on it after the rebuild and NEVER touched the valvetrain! It tested perfectly when it was last in the shop to find the dead ignitor box. I've ridden in rain, snow, ice, a tornado (not on purpose!) and even took a lap on it at Hollister Hills motocross raceway. The bike never whimpered.
