Yes, it's another Tori Amos, BUT ... this one wasn't (purely) out of obsession. It was a commission for the non-profit "fanzine", Little Blue World. Sure, all I'll get out of the deal is a free copy of the publication, but after all it only took me about three hours (on the clock, at work ... I love my job! What, you think I actually WATCH Superman Returns in its entirety three times a day? I've got the monitor on, and I'm in full view of all the equipment running. It is for a college project (our senior capstone class). Our customer/sponsor is having us build an experimental UAV capable of taking off as a fixed-wing aircraft and hovering/landing as an autogyro. This is a rotor swash-plate part. The part is t-6 Aluminum and all dimensions are +/-0.005 in except the od and bore, which are close press fit for bearings. All the turning was done on a conventional lathe and the pockets on a HAAS VF-2. I had to build two sets of soft jaws (one mill and one lathe) plus a special fixture to locate the cross-drilled holes and pockets from the reverse side. The pockets are thru the part, but three different sizes. This is a picture of a plastic injection mold that I made this semester for another class. It is a little key-chain fob advertising our SME ASU Student Chapter. The SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) logo is on the reverse side. The mold was machined on a HAAS VF2 using Surfcam. A decent amount of hand-polishing was involved. The engraving was done with a Dremel #106 Engraving Cutter, of all things, and did quite a nice job.
