Unless I am mistaken (or unless someone has built another) that is one of Kenneth Strickfaden's wonderful movie "mad lab" props. He rented them out of his garage to pictures from BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN all the way up to YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, but they've been little seen since he died in 1984. What can you tell us? (Although Ken's had a metal ring around the circumference attached to the opposite pole). Being an HV nut, I am on many HV/Tesla websites and built a few devices myself. That pic is NOT from any of Strickfaden's original electrical equipment. He had a name for each of his devices, but I have forgotten them. I first met Ken when I worked at Panavision and helped him to restore his old electric devices for use in "Young Frankenstein". They were all dusty and dirty and in disrepair. They were stored in his garage and needed much work to be operational again. Mel Brooks was intent in using the original "Frankenstein" equipment for his comedy take-off. Since I loved that kinda stuff, I volunteered. Years later, there was a special tribute to Ken and his electrical devices at (I think...again I forgot. They say memory is the 2nd thing to go...) the Academy Theatre here in Hollywood. They showed (sections of) "Young Frankenstein" and the original "Frankenstein" followed by a live demo by Ken of his equipment. Below is a pic of me (in the light-colored shirt) and my son (wearing "Vans" ) in the front row just behind the rope for the demo. "I got no screen credit"... since it was not "allowed" by the company. I was there as a corporate consultant and advisor. But, I really did have a lot of fun! I was thinking someday, I'll make a list of all the films I worked on...  |  IP: Logged William Hooper Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1879 From: Mobile, AL USA Registered: Jun 99 posted 04-13-2005 03:33 AM                        Besides their looking so cool, face it, they're art, that's why they were used in the movies, the thing I've always liked about them is that they're almost all actually doing something functional. The sparky things were rotary & static spark gaps actually hooked up to & part of the big induction coils, etc. It fits in perfectly with the set dressing of stuff that is actually supposed to be doing something. I don't know if it was Strickfaden's, but one of my favorites is in Bride of Frankenstein: they're monitoring a disembodied heart on a huge meter that's straight off the shelf. You can see the manufacturer's name on it. I never liked the little neon spiral that whirled around. The Pytlak family must have strong genes that override the others that are introduced, making everyone look similar. I agree with Scott. That pic with Dimaggio is really priceless. Very cool! William: The EFX that bug the heck outta me is the "do-nothing" lights as in that scanning/scintillating board in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" or the pulsating/pegging milliamp meter array. How stupit! Since I like neon... even if cheesy...I like it! All that and a buck 50 would buy me a good cup of coffee. I really have no interest in getting back in the biz. I'd much rather loaf and do what "I" want to do. I'm now officially a "Slacker" and enjoying it! The only "value" to all of that past stuff would be anecdotal...as in my above post. Or things like during the filming of "Jaws" when a Panaflex camera, lens, head, tripod, etc fell into the ocean...it was in shallow water and recovered...but still really funny at that time. Those types of things of which there are many. I always tried to get some "souvenir" from most all the pics I was involved with, no matter how small the part. I still have my "Lifeclock" hand crystal from "Logan's Run" ...and YES! It blinked RED a long, LONG time ago!  |  IP: Logged
