There's some real "cost" involved if you get bit by one of those things. Daddy long legs spiders are kind of nasty looking, but they don't scare me. Earlier this summer I found a tarantula under my trash can. That surprised me pretty good. It ran under my house. Garden spiders are both beautiful and scary looking at the same time. Their true name is "argiope aurantia." How do you pronounce that? The orb weaving spiders, like the one in my backyard featured in the previous photo, are only aggravating since they like to build their webs across places where you're likely to walk, such as across your front porch. I had a hell of a time taking the photo of that orb weaving spider. I got within about 6 inches of the spider using my 24-70mm lens zoomed to 70mm. A 180mm macro lens would have been nice, but I don't have $1400 laying around for that. The wind was blowing the spider's web in and out of the focal plane constantly. Infant children, the elderly or someone in really poor health is at more risk of dying from a black widow bite. The United States has had very few documented deaths from black widow bites. Same goes for the brown recluse spider. If any venom is injected into a bite (some black widow bites are harmless dry bites) the bite victim could have a very painful reaction with symptoms including abdominal cramps and pain similar to that of appendicitis or labor pains. That kind of pain might make me wish I had died. Out of poisonous spiders, I would be far more scared of the Funnel Web Spider in Australia. I've seen it rated as being the world's most venomous spider. Those things have venom that make a black widow or brown recluse seem very wimpy by comparison.
