To think that the sometimes hour+ long traffic jam getting across the dam is being replaced by, well, an artistic design is really quite thrilling. The delays crossing the dam these days aren't that bad since car traffic in and out of 'Vegas has dropped off so much. Truck traffic was banned from being on the dam after 9/11. The trucks end up adding about an hour or more to their running time between Phoenix and 'Vegas because they now have to detour through Laughlin and Kingman. I assume truck traffic will be allowed to use the new bridge, and that the speed limit(s) will be typical for divided highways in mountainous areas. The new bridge is built for four-lanes plus emergency lanes. I haven't heard anything about there being provisions for sightseeing traffic on the bridge. I suspect they may not permit it, reasoning that people can use the old highway for that. But you just know that people will want to check out the views from the new bridge. Regarding sightseeing on the bridge, I don't think it's going to be practical for drivers to slow to a crawl to rubberneck view the Hoover Dam. The section of highway going over the bridge is supposed to be up to Interstate highway standards. Maybe the bridge's completion could open the possibility for an Interstate highway linking Phoenix and Las Vegas directly. I've wondered why there wasn't an "I-11" or "I-13" between those two big cities already.  |  IP: Logged Sean Weitzel Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 619 From: Vacaville, CA (1790 miles west of Rockwall) Registered: Dec 1999 posted 02-05-2010 12:22 AM                     Here's two slides I took when my brother Tod and myself met Charlton Heston at the Pacific Cinerama dome in Hollywood. Pacific Theaters held a "closing" ceremony which took place right before the dome was closed for 2 years to build the Arclight complex and equip the dome for three strip projection for the first time in it's history. Terminator 2, and Lawrence of Arabia were screened in 70mm and a new 35mm print of Ben Hur was screened with Heston and his wife in attendance. These photos were taken July 29, 2000 (We had him sign the photo to our Dad.)  |  IP: Logged
