What it shows: Fifteen uncoupled simple pendulums of monotonically increasing lengths dance together to produce visual traveling waves, standing waves, beating, and random motion. One might call this kinetic art and the choreography of the dance of the pendulums is stunning! Aliasing and quantum revival can also be shown.

How it works: The period of one complete cycle of the dance is 60 seconds. The length of the longest pendulum has been adjusted so that it executes 51 oscillations in this 60 second period. The length of each successive shorter pendulum is carefully adjusted so that it executes one additional oscillation in this period. Thus, the 15th pendulum (shortest) undergoes 65 oscillations. When all 15 pendulums are started together, they quickly fall out of sync—their relative phases continuously change because of their different periods of oscillation. However, after 60 seconds they will all have executed an integral number of oscillations and be back in sync again at that instant, ready to repeat the dance.

Setting it up: The pendulum waves are best viewed from above or down the length of the apparatus. Video projection is a must for a large lecture hall audience. You can play the video below to see the apparatus in action. One instance of interest to note is at 30 seconds (halfway through the cycle), when half of the pendulums are at one amplitude maximum and the other half are at the opposite amplitude maximum.

Little Drummer Boy video

Winnipeg teen's Drummer Boy video a hit

Winnipeg musician Sean Quigley is winning praise for a new video, posted to YouTube, featuring a fierce rendition of the traditional Christmas song Little Drummer Boy.

Quigley's version was shot using familiar Winnipeg streets and locales and takes full advantage of heavy amounts of snow.

The video was uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday and soared from an initial viewing number of around 4,000 to over 41,000 views, or hits, in less than a day.

"Wow. This why I'm proud to be Canadian," one commentator on the site said after viewing the video.

"This is amazing!" wrote another. "I'm a Winnipegger living in California now, but I'll be home for Christmas. It's so good to see glimpses of home!! Good job, Sean!"

Quigley, 16, was moved to create the video because of the underlying message of the song.

"Drummer Boy speaks to me so much," he said. "The whole song is a story. It's about this boy who gets word of Jesus being born and he goes to see him and he doesn't have anything to give him; he's like 'I don't have money, I don't have gifts to give you. But I can play my drum and that's more than enough'."

The teen's production is all the more remarkable considering he played all the instruments, sang the vocals, recorded everything and directed and edited the video.

Quigley is a student at Oak Park High School in Winnipeg.

The guy needs to learn sync in editing. I found it highly distracting. Maybe most people don't notice.

She wants to hug cats? Let her hug this one!

Fact -- a man had a heart attack and died in his house. He was retired and no one came round to check on him for five days. Finally someone called the cops because they hear a dog letting out this terrible wail. When they found the man his dog was laying next to the body, visibly emaciated, in shock and trembling and what could only be described as depression. They ASPCA people said if someone hadn't come along a day later, the dog would have also died. It took months for the dog to recover and become playful again.

They also explained that in that same scenario they had seen an old woman, but she had a pet cat. When she died, the police broke in and they found the woman on the floor in the living room. The cat next to her; the cat had eaten the woman's face away.

Think about THAT when deciding what pet you'd like to start a relationship with!
