Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 02-04-2012 05:46 PM                     I have printed to 16x20 from BOTH Nikon and Canon 35mm cameras, actually...the Nikon generally had better results. Shooting my B&W on ilford went a long way to not emphasizing the grain. I also tend to use a diffusion light collector rather than a traditional condensing lens assembly on the light to also minimize the grain when doing the larger prints. I even did slide to 16x20 prints (Ektachrome was the best but Kodachrome wood do okay). BTW...my most recent purchase was a Samsung phone to USB cable...under $10 so not the biggest purchase. Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 02-04-2012 09:16 PM                     The difference there Joe is that a still isn't updated 24 times/second with random grain structure and a still may be observed at much closer range than the typical movie screen. And, for the record, Flat always looked nasty (as does Super-35 Scope). Why do you think 2K gets away with so much...nobody is close enough to see the screen door...it gets highlighted sometimes, depending on the image or credit scrolls. -Steve  |  IP: Logged Randy Stankey Film God Posts: 6539 From: Erie, Pennsylvania Registered: Jun 99 posted 02-05-2012 01:24 AM                     I was going to say what Steve said: Shoot some Ilford Pan F, ASA 50 but pull it back to ASA 25 and you'll be able to get a sharp print at 16x20. Now, if Ilford sold Pan F as sheet film, you could probably make a 20x30 that was so sharp you could shave with it! I replaced my HTC Wildfire S phone yesterday and today replaced the laptop with a new Toshiba Satellite L755-S5358. I also ordered a replacement Keyspan USB to Serial adapter. There is no replacing over 2,000 pictures, several client files, proprietary AMX programs written by me, and some specialty cables that I need for AMX systems. I've got a 45 SF that I neglect far too much, but when I do lug it about the place it does reward me. Very fond of the Nikkor-SW 120mm 1:8 I have for it too. I make optical prints in B&W out to 16x20 and 20x24 quite often, but I prefer the contrast of a condenser. A lot of those prints are from T-MAX 400 pushed to 1600 in Rodinal, so grain isn't really my first concern Steve, were those prints from Ektachrome and the like Cibachromes/Ilfochromes, or a different process? quote: Now, if Ilford sold Pan F as sheet film, you could probably make a 20x30 that was so sharp you could shave with it! My high-school photography teacher had an album of 8x10 Cibachromes from Kodachrome in her Hasselblad. The colour was phenomenal, and the depth breath-taking. Happily that process still survives as Ilfochrome Classic - love to try it myself someday. I sold my Onkyo TX-SR705, and got a deal on Newegg, so I'm only out $150! This is actually a clone of the Elite VSX-52, minus an aluminum face. Can't wait to test out the video scaler in it on my LaserDisc collection.
