And, in fact, I think it PROVES the hypothesis more than it disproves it. In order to fold the paper more than 7 times they had to use a football field sized piece of paper. They enlarged the parameters of the experiment to ensure that their experiment would succeed. Even then, they had a hard time getting the 7th and subsequent folds. They had to use a forklift and a steam roller. You'll need 6 people for this. Bet the staffers that a person can be lifted using just five fingers. Have one person stand still. Then have the five other people each place one finger under the person's elbows, feet and chin. Na na na na, Randy, you can't change the hypothesis -- there were no qualifiers in the original statement -- it says you can't fold a piece of paper more than 7 times -- period. No limitations or definitions of what kind of paper or how big. I think you could probably bust the myth if you used that very very thin paper they used to make carbon copies or the tissue paper they use to wrap clothing in at department stores or even large piece of toilet tissue-type paper. If you could get a piece paper that thin the size of a say a 3-sheet, you probably could fold that more than seven times too and without a forklift. You couldn't then come a long after the fact and say, oh no, you can't use very thin tissue paper. The original proposition doesn't say you can't use tissue paper or you can't use paper the size of a football field. No parameters were specified in the beginning so it allows the "experimenter" more leeway but I think there are some assumptions that apply. In fact, if you look closely, you'll see that the "piece" of paper they used in that experiment was made from several long strips of paper (from a roll) taped together. Basically, Mythbusters is reducing the experiment to the level of a bar bet: "You can't fold a piece of paper in half more than seven times UNLESS you start with a very, very large piece of paper the size of a football field OR unless you start with a microscopically thin piece of paper." Now, if they asked the question: "How large (or thin) does a piece of paper have to be before you can fold it in half more than 7 times?" I would have been more inclined to agree with the results. It's still just like Kirk beating the kobayashi maru. Nobody said you can't reprogram the computer. Did they? That Mythbusters episode just aired in Finland about a week ago and I'm still itching to try it. I'm stubborn, and not convinced it can't be done unless I try. And find a very thin piece of paper to try on... since I don't get the airline hangar approach, I'll have to do with what I get.
