Wolff, that was because my comment was directed solely at the "LFOA" comment, and not actual reel IDing.

The ID frame argument is to be taken to this thread. Any posts made here from this point regarding ID frame discussion in general will be deleted without notification. Keep it on topic, or make a new thread. This thread is for outing sucky projectionists/theaters only. [Big Grin]

I kinda hate to rat on a small independent running a special showing but...

Arcada Theatre, St. Charles, IL Sunday Sept. 26
"The Strong Man" (silent)

I think it was plattered though I could be wrong. They showed part numbers and parts of leaders but not countdowns. About 2/3 through we jump out of frame, 2 perfs. Operator frames up but can't seem to move it up more than a perf. Obviously the framer wasn't centered before starting. One would expect they would have moved it back down past where it was and continued down until the picture was framed. But no dice. It sat there about a perf out of frame for a minute or two and then the show stopped. There was then a moment of projection without a lens and then the lens was put back and the show continued in frame.

I suppose there could be an extenuating circumstance such as some sort of funky framer that jammed at one end of travel but at least from this perspective it seemed like they didn't have the sense to turn the knob the other way.

Okay, who the hell had print 6364 of Shall We Dance?
Let's talk about Film Done Right gone terribly wrong...

Lesson 1: Masking tape, great for painting, not for attatching leaders
Lesson 2: Making splices in the middle of a reel for no apparant reason=bad
Lesson 3: Attached trailers are attached for a reason...Don't take them off!
Lesson 4: If you have greasy ass hands wear gloves!
At least you used clear splice tape...But you didn't peel it off now did ya?

Who engineered your booth anyway, get this, ladies and gents...The lights up and intermission cues on this thing were 4 inches long on the sides and in the picture area.

i usually remove attached trailers. we are told which trailers to run. if the attached trailer is not one of them, and it rarely is, off it goes. we've been running the attached trailer for motorcycle diaries in front of maria full of grace, but tomorrow motorcycle diaries opens, so off the trailer comes.

oh, and if the attached trailer is spliced in so as to interrupt the soundtrack at the start of the film, guess what: off it goes.

Lesson 2 could also be explained by them removing lab splices.

Lesson 2 could also be explained by them removing lab splices.

A lab splice that is not on the frameline, or that is poorly made, should be remade. At most, you will lose two frames in making a proper splice. Always use high quality CLEAR splicing tape (not "zebra" tape) or an ultrasonic splicer, and do NOT mark the splice in any way. If there is significant safelight fogging (blue/cyan/magenta coloration) around a lab splice, request a replacement reel, and return the fogged reel.

A well-made ultrasonic lab splice that is on the frameline and that will not show on the screen should be left in the print, although you may want to use clear splicing tape on the base side of the lab splice for added reliability.

So who is running the Arcada these days? Doesn't CATOE handle the silent film stuff along with the pipe organ?

I worked for a company that had us remove the attached and put it before the policy. They never got put back on. This included Disney movies such as "Monsters Inc." and "The Rookie".

The theatre at:

20140 Ridge Top Circle
Sterling, Virginia 20116

On first inspection, I wasn't going to out you for your print of Shawn of the Dead. Had the ususal poorly fastened reels (two of them).

When I saw the first reel's leader taped on with masking tape with your zebra tape left on, I figured it was the usual tape job on heads and tails, and I was correct.

But then, your true colors began to shine through. Base side scratches throughout the print, on the non-soundtrack side, barely visible on the screen, but there none the less.

White shoe polish on the edges at the reel joins. And what the hell??? Nine (9) frames left on the leader of Reel #4!! I restored them.

Do you suck? With both lips. [fu]

At the Calgary International Film Festival's screening of Cremaster 3, reel 4 was tail-first. After a couple minutes it was shut off, and all the artsy people in the auditorium started talking about what an interesting choice the director had made in placing the camera upside-down. I think they could have ran the whole reel backwards and no one would have noticed. They had it back onscreen in just under 10 minutes.

We ran High Noon with Gary Cooper this weekend at the Landmark Loews Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, NJ. The begining of Reel 1 had clear leader with a tape message on it that said "This is an archival print, do not cut any frames". The only problem is all the countdown leader and the studio credit (logo?) was missing. Other than that, it was an almost flawless print. Print #1001.

I have a bone to pick with ETS...
The original attachment for Taxi was Flight of the Phoenix. Fine.
The new attachment was Fat Albert. Fine.
Wouldn't it have made sence to cut the original trailer off at the frameline?
I should think it would also have been important to cut the new attachment on frame as well!
Moreover, leaving 2 feet of the original attachment on the head of the reel is just plain irresponsible and what are they using to make their cuts? A chipped axe? The film was MAULED at the splices for crying out loud!

Got print 03591 of The Village which I was actually excited to see had a one sided splice with CLEAR tape on the heads of every reel. Thought this print would be a cinch in great condition possibly even film-guarded but was soon to learn otherwise. A bit after these wonderful splices at the heads was blue marker to aid the visually impaired with breakdown, with a silver mark across the frameline over the tape on one side and on the film on the other side!?!? After winding reel one on, no tail to be found. Masking taped to the reel. Odd. Wound reel 2 on, no tail. And so on. Not one tail on the feature. Not that I need them, but what if this went to a reel-reel house? Other than that there were cues in the middle of the frame as usual and also many scratches which thankfully didn't show on screen for the most part.

Before Sunset print 0156 was another story. Upon opening the can found reel one had un-wound past the head and into the film only to wind itself onto reel 2. Towards the end of reel one it seemed there was a brain wrap but instead of sacrificing any frames tiger tape (which by now had almost disintegrated) was used to join the mangled film back together. Curious how it could have run through a projector after that unless this happened on breakdown, with creases and the outer edges of the film folded in towards the sprockets. And then just more fun with both base and emulsion scratching and particularly messy scratching at reel changes. Called and left a message to find out where they came from, how do you guys usually know this? Asking the driver or if they leave their shipping lable on the can?

i had the same exact problem as Dominic with Taxi, they changed the attached and it was out of frame. and i dont see how some theatres can run the same exact "attached" trailer for the whole engagement. are we just a weird theatre that changes their trailers every week??

and uh...i am new here, plus it took over a week for me to get registered, so i was going to post a while ago. is it just me or do the links (like to other forums) just take anyone else to the home page.

ive been in the theatre business for 3 years and 2 of them as a projectionist. im at the Logan Luxury Theatres in Mitchell SD.
