I'm not the only projectionist here, but by "luck" of the draw I worked the days of the switch, which I didn't even learn was happening until the day before. The last shows were Battleship at 9:30 and Dark Shadows at 10:00. Earlier in the day I also ran the last shows of MIB 3 and For Greater Glory, which shared auditoriums with the others. It felt kind of like being at a funeral, or actually digging the graves. My theater had run film for 23 years, and I'd been doing it for six. I'll never forget it. Now they use only stacked Barcos, the Century's haven't gotten get set up for two summers now. The whole system needs to be setup at the beginning of the summer in control tower in the middle of the park -- sound mixing on the bottom floor, light control in the middle and projection booth on top. It sure saves a lot of time and workhours not needing to hoist the two 35s up there and then tearing them down. But then again, the video look, well...not like film. The other two venues still use Simplex in change-over, one with xenon, the other (my full-time 2500 seat house) with carbon arc. Both venues have Eastman 25B for 16mm. In fact, at the Museum today, they are running a show that will include three 16mm shorts. That machine was just upgraded and refurbished Friday and yesterday by Full Aperture's James Bond who has designed a new intermittent coupling that eliminates the machine's only design weakness. So not only will at least these two venues still run film, but 16mm film at that. This venue will be upgrading their non-DCI compliant video to a Barco DCI unit in the spring, but 16mm and dual 35mm will still live next to it and run fill whenever necessary.  |  IP: Logged John Stevens Film Handler Posts: 6 From: Whitianga, New Zealand Registered: Mar 2009 posted 07-21-2012 02:28 AM                     We are still running 35mm and by the sounds of it we still will for a little while longer, with the distributors getting prints from tailand= Cheaper $$. Also with other situations changing over we get more prints offered than we can screen!!. SMG Lewisville was the last one to convert. Here is a picture taken last month: And a picture taken tonight as the theater was down to the last screen running 35mm (array tracks being taken down here): Other platter arrays: SMG Arlington Booth video tour SMG Copperfield SMG Royal SMG Plano (the first one, note no dual payout or takeup) And a shot of a VERY early (and primitive) version of the delayed interlock. This one could only delay 10 minutes. The final design could delay up to 40 minutes with up to 4 projectors in any delay combination. Goodbye film.
