I also have the studio style flat gate I'd like to replace with the newer curved one. I have the P-35 version, with Ultramittent and single lens mount. I was able to successfully put Kelmar dowser assembly on it though. I have a CAT 701 so I don't need Dolby Digital in the optical setup. I am wondering if it would be better to just get another, more up to date machine and scrap this one. Since this is for my house and biz is pretty slow I don't want to throw much money at it either. Today, I feel like I am in a fog. Yes, it was a shock to the system, but still employed .. but now as anywhere else in the building as needed..and doing DCP builds, maintenance along with bulb changes when warranty gets close. But, now after seeing all of this conversion, I've begin to wonder about the one person that is 'really' in charge: and that is the technician. In the past, the technician had his hands full with machine based units - with gears, belts, oil motors "A and B" sound checks, parts that wears out and the like. Now, with digital taking over our booths, none of these attributes now exist since the digital unit does two things. It runs or it doesn't .. like a computer. With the units behaving normally, it seems that the techs are now lost with hardly anything to do when visiting locations, or waiting for phone calls that used to contain issues with picture and/or sound. Going to wait a couple of weeks before we start moving the 35mm stuff out. Gotta find a place to put it in my garage. Putting in Barco DP2K-23B's @ 4.2KW with GDC servers and USL JSD-60 sound processors. One thing they could be doing is more work to improve sound quality in lots of theaters. Too many locations are still pretty deficient on the sound side of things. It takes more than a master quality 24-bit Linear PCM surround track embedded in the DCP to deliver great sounding audio to the audience. Lots of d-cinema conversions have taken place with little to nothing done to existing 5.1 channel wired sound systems. Some theaters operators, like Mike Blakesley for instance, are going that extra step to make big sound system improvements. From my point of view it looks like the major theater chains are doing as little as they need to do. Just pondering things from "a better world" pipe dream perspective if the theater chains want to keep the tech guys busy they'll turn them loose on those sound system issues. Sadly, that would involve the big theater chains spending more money and pissing off various investors in their stock. They'll probably go the other direction and reduce the number of tech guys down to a minimum level. What better way to increase profit margins other than cutting payroll?  |  IP: Logged
