I liked the film a lot better than most of you. I think that many are critical because it’s ‘hip’ to hate George these days. The audience that I saw the film with loved it. Since we already know most of these characters and the storyline, it would be impossible for this film to have the same effect on us as the originals.

Having said that, there were certain things that bothered me:
- As someone else stated, when the platform falls on Obi-Wan and his body is moved, the CGI is terrible (actually, I don’t think this was CGI – looked like a miniature to me) – it looks like a little toy doll.
- Several times in the fight with General Grievous at the beginning of the film, the movement of the ship (presumably when hit by a missile) looks like bad camera shake.
- Natalie Portman can be a great actress (“Closer”), but she was absolutely terrible in this movie. I’m sure this was partly because of George’s poor direction and partially due to working blue screen (or green screen) although most of her poor acting was in scenes with Christensen.
- I actually liked Hayden Christensen’s portrayal, even though he played almost exactly the same character in Shattered Glass. But there were definitely certain key lines that were delivered too passively to make any sense.
- I thought Samuel Jackson was fine, even though he seemed angry most of the time. (More on the anger of the Jedi below).

After seeing this film, I went back and watched the original trilogy (original versions) and found a fair number of plot holes throughout the series, some of which have already been mentioned by others:

Episode III: If anger and fear lead to the dark side, why does Yoda look so angry in each of his “fights”? Why does Obi Wan smile when he kills all the droids in the elevator?
Episode III: If the Jedi can feel changes in the Force and can “search their feelings”, how come they don’t know that Palpatine is the Sith Lord?
Episode III: In an early scene, the Sith Lord already looks like he has the effects of the electrical charges that deform his face later in the film.
Episode III: Why does Darth swear his allegiance to the Emperor even after Padame dies? The biggest reason given for turning to the dark side was to save her life. It’s no longer an issue once she’s dead.
Episode III and later: If Chewbacca works with Yoda to fight the Empire, how come this role is never mentioned in Episodes IV-VI? Does this mean that Chewbacca was hiding his role in the battles from Han Solo?
Episode III-IV: At the end, instructions are given to erase C3POs memory, which explains why he can’t tell Luke in Episode IV what has transpired before. But R2D2 knows everything that happened previously. How come R2D2 doesn’t retell it to C3PO, who can then tell Luke?
Episode IV: I believe there’s at least one scene where Vader sees R2D2 and C3PO. How come he doesn’t recognize at least C3PO, since he built him as a child.
Episode IV: Both the Emperor and Darth Vader “know” that Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker. But when the name of Luke Skywalker first comes up, neither brings up the possibility that Luke is Vader’s son. Is Skywalker such a common name in that galaxy?
Episode IV: How does Obi Wan know that Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker? Same for Yoda in Ep V. At the end of Ep III, he thinks Anakin is dead.
Episode IV: What purpose does Obi Wan’s “suicide” serve? He doesn’t become “more powerful” as he tells Darth Vader he would be.
Episode IV: Vader tells Obi Wan, “You shouldn’t have come”. Why doesn’t he say, “where have you been for the last 20 years?” or “I’m going to kill you for almost burning me to death”?
Episode IV: What is Darth Vader’s motivation for his actions? It’s never expressed. It can’t be to oppose the Jedi or Obi Wan because Obi Wan has been in hiding for at least 20 years and there are no other Jedi, except for Yoda, who isn’t mentioned in Ep IV. Is it to bring order to the Empire? But the only disorder is a small band of rebels. Why does this small band of rebels require the construction of the Death Star? Episode III does a good job of explaining how Anakin became Vader, but Episode IV does not ever explain what Vader now wants.
Episode IV: A more minor quibble, but why does Leia wear her hair like Padame does (with the rolls on the side of her head.) She never knew her mother and I don’t remember anyone else in any of the films wearing that style.
Episode V and VI: In Ep V, Yoda insists that Luke not help his friends, but complete his Jedi training instead. Yet when Luke returns in Ep VI to complete his training, Yoda tells him that his training is complete. Similarly, Vader keeps telling Luke that Obi Wan has taught him well, but Luke had no further training from Obi Wan between the two fights with Vader.
Episode VI: Chewbacca tells the blind Han Solo that Luke is now a Jedi Knight. But later in the episode, Yoda first informs Luke that he is a Jedi.
Episode VI: Leia tells Luke she remembers her mother, but in episode III, Padame dies in childbirth. I don’t buy Dave Williams’ explanation of this, that Leia just remembered a ‘feeling’, since she has The Force.

Had they been made in order, Episode 2 would never have been green-lit.

My turn to answer some questions [beer]

quote: Martin Brooks
If the Jedi can feel changes in the Force and can “search their feelings”, how come they don’t know that Palpatine is the Sith Lord?
As Yoda says in EP2 "The dark side has clouded everything". Simply put Palpatine uses his powers to hide himself.

quote: Martin Brooks
Why does Darth swear his allegiance to the Emperor even after Padame dies? The biggest reason given for turning to the dark side was to save her life. It’s no longer an issue once she’s dead.
He had also already given himself to the dark side so he really has nothing else to lose if fact devotion to his family is what eventually turns him back anyway.

quote: Martin Brooks
Both the Emperor and Darth Vader “know” that Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker. But when the name of Luke Skywalker first comes up, neither brings up the possibility that Luke is Vader’s son. Is Skywalker such a common name in that galaxy?
As far as Vader's concern I dont remember Luke's name coming up at all in EP4. Luke only becomes known to Vader inbetween EP4 and EP5 as the name of the man who blew up the Death Star would become known. Then Vader becomes obsessed with finding Luke.

quote: Martin Brooks
How does Obi Wan know that Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker? Same for Yoda in Ep V. At the end of Ep III, he thinks Anakin is dead.
I am pretty sure that it would be easy for Obi Wan to keep tabs on the going ons as far as the Empire is concerned. At the very least there has to be some version of a press.

quote: Martin Brooks
What purpose does Obi Wan’s “suicide” serve? He doesn’t become “more powerful” as he tells Darth Vader he would be.
It can only be assumed that he knew that he would be better able to help and watch over Luke as a ghost.

quote:
Vader tells Obi Wan, “You shouldn’t have come”. Why doesn’t he say, “where have you been for the last 20 years?” or “I’m going to kill you for almost burning me to death”?
Vader most certainly knew that Obi Wan was still alive somewhere but was content to leave him in exile.

quote: Martin Brooks
What is Darth Vader’s motivation for his actions? It’s never expressed. It can’t be to oppose the Jedi or Obi Wan because Obi Wan has been in hiding for at least 20 years and there are no other Jedi, except for Yoda, who isn’t mentioned in Ep IV. Is it to bring order to the Empire? But the only disorder is a small band of rebels. Why does this small band of rebels require the construction of the Death Star? Episode III does a good job of explaining how Anakin became Vader, but Episode IV does not ever explain what Vader now wants.
Other than to take control of the empire (and more power) there really isn't anyother explaination. The Death Star was constructed to not only crush the rebellon but also to hold the other hundreds of star systems in check.

quote: Martin Brooks
Chewbacca tells the blind Han Solo that Luke is now a Jedi Knight. But later in the episode, Yoda first informs Luke that he is a Jedi.
Luke was passing himself off as a jedi to everyone at the beginning of EP6 (to try to intimidate Jabba?) even though he didn't think he really was. Besides Yoda told him that his training would not be complete until he faced Vader a second time (and kill him). So technically Luke wasn't really a Jedi Knight until the very end of the movie.

I guess that is all for now. Hey I am a computer tech now. I am suppose to be a geek with no life.

Here are your answers:
  • Because Georgey thinks it looks cool. Just 'cause.
  • Because George does not know how to write.
  • He does? It was hard to tell from the pirated version I watched. I can't believe Lucas would allow his pirated movies to look so bad. I thought quality sight and sound were his mantra. I will never pirate another George Lucas movie again, that ass!
  • Because the Emperor would have made fun of Vader and told everyone about his "Nooooooooooooooooo!" yell which was extremely, umm, yeah.
  • George included Chewbacca so the fans would think his movie is cool. Plot holes do not concern him.
  • R2-D2 is a known retard. I thought they told them to erase both their memories.
  • Because George did not actually have the whole storyline in his head when he made the original Star Wars. Contrary to what he has said, he made most of it up as he went along, from movie to movie. The only thing he had were vague ideas. I don't even think that he thought Vader was Luke's dad when he made Star Wars.
  • The Emperor wasn't in Episode IV ya goon!
  • Do not question George. He will have you killed. He likes killing people.
  • Liam Neeson tought Obi GYN how to appear and chat with people after death. So Ben gives it all up so he can follow Luke around, spy on him when he's naked and talk to him and give him guidance.
  • Or better yet, why didn't Vader whine and cry and say "I haaaaatteee you!!!"?
  • He is compensating for his small, burnt off penis.
  • This was done for the fans, all of whom are idiots and should be killed. Slowly. The fans say "OMG she is wearing her hair like Leia OMG she is Leia's mom oh that's so cool LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!"
  • Because Yoda is lazy and would rather die than deal with whiny Mark Hamill, who only wants power converters. Whininess must run strong in his family. Also, his sister is a bitch in Episode IV.
  • What the hell does Chewbacca know? He's an old fart, like Ben Kenobi.
  • Because George did not have the story about how Padme dies in mind. The only other explanation is that she still thought of Jimminy Smit's wife as her real mom, and she kicked the bucket soon after the adoption.

I take it you mean "episodic" order? 'cuz they were certainly made in release date order.

This pisses me off. Why does Luke have to go through so much shit to become a Jedi? He's got to face Vader twice and kill his dad. What did Samuel L. Jackson have to do to become a Jedi? How about Anakin? I bet they didn't have to do crazy crap like that.

Martin, Martin, you think people don't like the new movies because it is "hip" not to like them, but then you proceed to give us the longest list of plotholes drawn up on these forums so far? No comment.
I think few had expected these movies to have the same effect on us as the originals. But we could have been surprised and dazzled by interesting twists and turns in the plot. But George did not even try to dazzle anybody. He just tried to play everything safe. That these movies mostly rely on already known characters and elements is, in my humble opinion, one of the most devastating mistakes of the new trilogy. It is what I call the Sesame Street effect. Lots of well known characters who are all friends, let us all give each other a biiiig bear hug.

I'm a little late on this... been trying to get my butt into college...

I don't like digital cameras either and there were plenty of very cartoonish elements. But, there were plenty of fake looking puppets, matts around spaceships, funky shots that made the ships look like they were stopped (espeically in EPIV).

So, with all that... special effects whether digital or models or whatever, are imperfect and we'll always be able to find unreal looking things.

Acting... typical star wars. It's never been a show driven by dialog but by settings so I'm fine with that.

The story... well, the other two previous movies are much better now because of this movie. I just watched them both and EPI especially was so much better a movie now that all the questions it left are answered. A lot of seemingly needless things now make plenty of sense etc. Even the OT is fresh now. Luke looking at the suns, Liea saying things that her mother would have said, Luke saying and doing things Anakin did and said... the whole Emporer seducing Luke at the end... Man, the line "So be it, Jedi" was always awsome to me but I saw it the other day and Palp seemed all that much more evil.

I can only say that the way things played out are pretty much how I imagined them when I was a kid. Ewan is obviously a deserving star, Natalie is I think competing for the most perfect woman award lol, and Ian is just WOW. The emotion was strong and I really noticed that one thing George did very well is cause us to care about this whole new set of characters that eveyone said no one would ever really care about.

So far with the whole saga now I can only find two or three major plot hole issues. How does Leia remember her mother when she was a blind infant? Why is Obi Wan so decripid by EPIV? and why does the Tantive IV look so much different? LOL

Just about every other thing people have brought up has an answer and that's pretty amazing.

This movie truly did make the whole PT thing worth the effort and I really feared it wouldn't be.

I still think the OT stands up without any of the changes that have been made to it. There is no reason why kids can't be told, You know... that was made 30 years before that one and look... even the newer ones have some crappy looking visuals in them so what does it matter if one crappy looking visual is another kind than the other? lol

Since I can't reply to myself, I'll edit this with some other thoughts I had... Obviously I hadn't read very much of the thread when I posted. LOL

Obi Wan hears Palpatine call Anakin Lord Vader when he is viewing the security tapes.

It's very possible that Obi Wan doesn't learn that DV is still alive until they sense each other on the death star.

Vader does not learn of Luke until the battle of Yavin. That's why the Emperor is talking about thier "New enemy" in Empire Strikes Back.

Well, they went through more. Trained from a toddler, living in the Jedi temple, etc...

There had to be some challenge to make up for all those years lost. Plus... the whole point isn't Jedi. The whole point of star wars is that there is more than being a Jedi involved and at stake. Luke was still thnking two dimentionally. Big deal... your a jedi like your father before you. What now? If Vader hadn't fullfilled his destiny Luke would have died. Obviously the Emporer would have too had he remained on the Death Star, but there still would be no more Jedi left.

I can't believe I actually know something about Star Wars that someone else doesn't. Could I be becoming one of .... them?

quote: Joe Redifer
R2-D2 is a known retard. I thought they told them to erase both their memories.
At the end of EpIII, that one guy who's giving the droids to that other guy says, "Have the protocol droid's mind wiped." Meaning C3PO. R2D2's memory is not erased.

What's not clear is, why doesn't R2 tell C3PO about what he knows sometime in the next 18 years? Jeez, maybe he is a retard.

{Edit to fix typo...I hate typos]

No, he doesn't tell 3PO anything ever because he knows 3PO is the retard. Just like in EPIV... R2 gets 3PO in the escape pod by telling him nothing of what is going on. 3PO then shuts him self off when R2 plays the message for Obi Wan and therefore doesn't even know who R2 is talking about when "He keeps repeating she's here."

And yes, Bail tells Captain Antillies to have the protocol droid's mind wiped.

Maddox gripes about every single thing that exists. If I was as cynical and negative as he is I'd probably have killed myself by now. He gets his jollies by acting like he is cooler than everyone because he knows that secure people in life could really care less what he thinks anyway.

Oh, I'm so ashamed now that Maddox thinks I'm a nerd... wah.

Really, I'd like to see him put his money where is mouth is just once and really do a better job at than what he is griping about. There are critics, those who critique because they have done something cool and want to help someone, and those who are just out there doing something.

I think Dreamworks animated films are weak compared to Pixar but you know what... I couldn't make one of those a third as cool as Robots and they sure do get to do something they love for a living, and make a good one while thier at it. Must suck to be them.

Sure Star Wars has flaws but it has had flaws from day one. I mean, come on... a trash monster on a space station? How'd it get there, by tie fighter? lol
