Apparently your friend likes big blue 3D. And no, Avatar will not be among them, it's just too silly. I saw African Queen with my parents at the Richmond Drive-In when the movie was fairly new and I was 7 or 8 and liked it ever since. Held my interest, mindless fun, very colorful, technically good 3D (but also nothing new). Bland story, misguided message, cardboard characters, uninspired score. Over all, fairly middle-of-the-road event film... not bad, but wouldn't want to sit through it again. Not a game changer in any way, though. This is, in my opinion, the top of the curve for 3D. The expense of the film will work against the system, and the line-up of product coming up is very cheesy. People who think Pandora is a perfect world and depressed not only need a grip, but didn't get the point (it's *not* a perfect world). PS. The XpanD system sucked. That being said, I was looking at its gross on Box Office Mojo, and, in order to feel some small sense of validation for my potentially minority belief, I checked out its position on their all time box office adjusted for inflation page, where they rank it as 36th place. Here's the thing, though. They list its actual gross as $491,767,000, and its adjusted gross as $498,482,300. How can inflationary trends have had a real impact in the last month or so? Inflation-adjustment is mostly done by multiplying estimated admissions by the latest average ticket price. Where admissions are unavailable, adjustment is based on the average ticket price for when each movie was released (taking in to account re-releases where applicable). It's not inconceivable that the average ticket price could rise by 1.4% in that period. As for the Golden Globes, Best Picture - Drama? WHAT THE FUCKING HELL!! Yes. Should they? No. I guess it depends on who you mean by "they". Do the stars? Yep, they turn up for the ceremony. Does the press? Yep, they report on it. Does the movie-going public? Pretty much, they watch in on TV and read Woman's Day and follow it on the internet and chat about it online. I guess it's just cynical pricks like you and I that don't take it seriously. YMMV. Nevertheless, I was not too surprised to see Avatar getting the Golden Globe statue. That awards show is a little more geared to rewarding movies with the most popularity/box office earnings than rewarding artistic quality. Also, the field of nominees in the Best Picture/Drama category was not very impressive. Critically speaking, Precious may really be the best movie out of the group, although The Hurt Locker has been getting a lot of praise lately. I rented The Hurt Locker on Blu-ray last week. I thought it was a pretty good, but NOT great and NOT very authentic in some instances. There was one particular sequence involving sniper versus sniper stuff that was pure Hollywood bullshit. It wouldn't surprise me if The Hurt Locker won the Best Picture Oscar though.  |  IP: Logged
