Try again? Their clock says it was 8pm. They were on-time for an 8pm show (by their clock). It was really 7pm. One hour before the 8pm show starts.

Shit. OK, you're right. Mea culpa, or whatever. I musta got my spring-forward mixed up with my fall-back -- which as you may know, can be very painful.

they would have been an hour late for the movie, not an hour early.
Nope. Think about it again.

Post count +2.

Edit: Didn't see John's response. Oh well I still get the extra post count for replying.

Joe,

A long time ago a guy showed up early like that and I told him "You're an hour early." He didn't believe me until he remembered the time change. But the funny part about it was the fact that this was over a month after everyone changed their clocks.

A lady showed up yesterday at 2:05 and thought she was late for the 3:00 show. She sat in her car for a half hour and then came in for the organ overture and the Marilyn Monroe film.

This DOES happen!

Had a guy come in Sunday night about 6:45. He tracks me down at the snack bar to ask why we took all the times down from the window. I start to explain to him that we don't run shows in the 9:00 hour Sunday-Thursday during the school year so we take down those times Saturday night. He starts to tell me I'm lying and that he saw the times earlier that day. I point out that I'm the one who actually changed them Saturday night and then his wife reminds him he looked on Saturday.

As it turns out, he was wanting to see a show in the 7:00 hour and those times were exactly the same as Saturday and he was right on time, but he had no idea what he wanted to watch.

Fortunately, I usually don't have to deal directly with customers.

But over the years I've witnessed some interesting encounters between the floor staff and patrons.

Here's an incident I've seen several times over the years and it happened again over this past weekend.

Customer comes in for a 7:30pm show. (for example)

We explain there is no 7:30 show.

Customer insists that a 7:30 show was listed in The SF Chronicle newspaper.

We pull out a copy of The Chronicle and show them that there is no 7:30pm show listed.

Customer takes a deep breath and then says indignantly " Well, there was a 7:30pm show listed in MY copy!

Customer than says something like they are "never coming back" but asks what time the next show is before leaving.

When ever someone pulled that same remark with me, I would tell them to bring in the paper to prove it and I would give them free passes and concessions. Never in 25 years have I had to pay up.

What's the goal here? To make the customer feel like an idiot?
Or to give them a way out without embarassing them terribly much?

Had a customer do this a couple months ago. He came in on a Saturday for a show and when the cashier let him know that it didn't start for another hour he insisted that the his paper listed a different start time. We didn't have a copy of the day's paper to check, but apologized and told him we would check into it. He ended up not buying a ticket and left. After he left we obtained a copy of the day's paper and all our listing were correct.

Later that evening he called and informed us that HIS paper listed a different show time. Again we apologized and told him that if he brought up his copy for us to see we would more than gladly pass him on through as our guest.

The next day he comes in with HIS paper and sure enough it lists different times, BUT it was Friday's copy NOT Saturday's. When it was pointed out to him along with the fact that at the bottom of the ad it states "Show times good for today only" , he said that was ridiculous, because the Friday entertainment section of the paper is called "Weekend Entertainment" and that implies that it for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Needless to say he walked off none too happy.

I would think that kind of confusion could be addressed by simply prefacing the showtimes with the day of the week.

For example:

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
Fri 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30

Even if every listing only had a Friday set of showtimes listed, it would alleviate the issue of customer confusion, wouldn't it?

Of course, including Sat and Sun showtimes in a Friday ad seems logical to me. I know people who receive the Friday paper but not the Saturday paper, so it would make sense that those people would reference Friday's paper to make their weekend plans.

Of course, it just underscores how antiquated newspapers are in providing information. Given the issues of print and steady decline in newspaper readership, it makes sense to wean your customers off the newspaper as a source of showtimes and information.

We don't usually have this problem as our newspaper is a weekly. We've had people say our times are wrong but it always turns out they are looking at last week's paper. I've had people say the recording is wrong when it isn't, as well.

The 7:00 PM feature always starts at 7:00PM.

Matinee times on week ends are adjusted to make the 7:00 PM FEATURE start at 7.

We have people trained so they don't come 20 or 30 minutes after 7 and expect to see the beginning of the feature.

Great concept and it works!

I smell bullshit. If they forgot to switch their clocks BACK, that means their clocks said it was 8:00 when in reality it was 7:00. Therefore if they were following their clocks, they would have been an hour late for the movie, not an hour early. I think this story was just made up by Joe in order to increase his post count.
At the site I work one of the managers put up a sign the night before reminding staff "remember to put your clocks back so you don't come to work late tomorrow."

I spent ten minutes staring at the sign thinking hang on a minute -if they didn't change their clocks, all the staff would arrive for their shifts an hour early tomorrow - not late!

Ten minutes?

They'll get up an hour early, go back to sleep, and then show up late. [Big Grin]
