Crowds have been good but not great ... in fact HIDALGO did better business here. I think word of mouth has been such that a lot of people have been scared off. If we'd had this film on the break we'd have done three times the business on it. Oh well. It makes no sense. I think the US grosses is a dead subject by now. Maybe we can get news of its reception in non US Countries. Added comment in Edit: I did not mean that the US grosses were dead. Just that this topic about US grosses is pretty much a dead issue. Everyone acknowledges it has been a monster hit here. A 400 million is now closer and will come soon. Please take a closer look at the 'daily'(total) average for PASSION and the rest. Is it without any reason that more theatres were added to 'PASSION' this week than what that movie has ever seen ? If many here were so right, most exhibitors ought to have thought that a 3000+ count for a movie in its fourth week was simply too much and should have come down in favour of other films. But that simply is not happening. In fact, just the reverse is true and so, why are some people here willing to bet even money to prove that 'PASSION' is due to doom ? It is so obvious that many exhibitors have put their money already on 'PASSION' in a sense by holding on to it. PASSION's is #1 on Wednesday and looks likely to harvest big on Friday. None of the new releases for Friday,9th seem to have anything in them to reign at the Box office for any length of time. If RT is any indicator(a limited, though) of what to expect at the Box-office, then what to expect at all for : WHOLE TEN YARDS - 3% THE ALAMO - 32 % JOHNSON FAMILY VACATION - 10% ELLA ENCHANTED - 38% GIRL NEXT DOOR - 62% However, the fact that PASSION only recived 50% at RT is of little significance at this point - it never mattered to the paying public. So, have the critics missed anything this week too ? As expected PASSION simply rocks this weekend. At this rate, what is PASSION headed for anyway ? Neither Spiderman nor Starwars/Phantom Menace had any such windfall during their tenure. We were slated for one showing of Passion - during the 10:00 round. D'oh! I drove by the Regal location yesterday around 1PM and there were probably no more than 20 cars in the parking lot. Meanwhile TPOTC moved back into first place by a wide margin (and The Alamo has already been declared a major flop). The film could be another "ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW" if Mel Gipson re release the picture every Easter. Even if people will have the movie on DVD by next Easter, I am sure it will still do well in theatres every year during the Lenten season if theatres are available for rent during the showings. -Claude.  |  IP: Logged
