New theater brings a sense of indie cool to FAU
Once known for its placid nightlife, Florida Atlantic University is giving students and the community a reason to be on the Boca Raton campus after dark.
A new Culture and Society building, which will be used for classes during the day, will transform into a hip indie movie house by night. It's part of a partnership between FAU and Living Room Theaters, a Portland-based theater company.
The 73,000-square-foot, $19 million complex has four screens of independent, foreign and classic films as well as a European-style café offering gourmet food, beer, wine and coffee. The building has 14 classrooms, conference rooms, offices and a three-story atrium.
During school hours, when the complex is closed to the public, it will be used as classroom space for FAU's communications program. Classes will begin in January.

While FAU's film program is mostly housed at its Fort Lauderdale campus, students will take classes such as film critique and theory inside the theaters. They'll also learn how to use digital film equipment.
The movie theater, located off Indian River Street on the south side of campus, is holding a soft opening now and will hold its big grand opening Dec. 2-5, with $2 tickets.
It's open to the public about 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and earlier for matinees on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
"Not only will the theaters help our students and enhance our film studies program, but the new venture will help build film culture in this area and help strengthen the economy with new jobs," said Manjunath Pendakur, dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.
It's definitely creating a buzz on campus.
"With a new social hub here on our campus right next to our dorms, FAU will have so much more to offer students as far as things to do," said Garrett Astler, 23, a multimedia journalism student who lives near the FAU campus, on Glades Road just east of Interstate 95.
And it could be a draw for alumni and community members as well.
"I think it's fabulous," said FAU graduate Elle Weberg, 26, of Coral Springs. "It's something very different. There's nothing else like this around here."
You might think a new movie theater is the last thing Boca needs. The campus is right next to the gigantic 20-screen Cinemark Palace, which plays most of the top blockbusters. And two miles away is the eight-screen Sunrise Cinemas at Mizner Park, which offers both major motion pictures as well as foreign and independent films.
But theater owners promise an experience you won't find in your neighborhood multiplex. Each of the four screens has 48 stadium-style seats, less than half of what you find in most theaters. Each seat is a big leather chair that's so comfy you might doze off if the movie is dull.
Like most movie houses, the snack bar sells popcorn. But other offerings include veggie sushi hand rolls, prosciutto apple provolone paninis and lemongrass flank steak skewers. There is also an assortment of cheeses, salads, pizzas and cured meats, as well as a dessert menu that includes chocolate mousse tart and crème brulee. Most prices range from $4 to $9.
Admission is $9.50 for most evening showings and $7.50 for weekend matinees. Students, educators, seniors and military personnel can get in for $6.50 for matinee and evening shows. All shows cost $5 on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Renovated movie theater in north Macon planning to open next week
More than two months after its $1-million face-lift began, a nearly 20-year-old cinema on Macon’s north side is expected to be open in time for the holiday movie season.
Minus sticky auditorium floors and rickety seats, The Edge 14, as the former Regal Rivergate Cinema 14 is now known, is scheduled to begin showing movies again Wednesday.

The opening comes just in time to cater to the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas crowds.
The theater’s new owners have gutted its old lobby, moving the concessions counter and the restrooms to different spots, and installed 1,095 sleek, partially reclining new seats in eight of the building’s 14 cinemas.
Only eight of the screens will open Wednesday, owners say. The other six will be converted to stadium-style layouts and open in the coming months.
The theater, which sits near the corner of Tom Hill Sr. Boulevard and Northside Drive, first opened in late 1991. Its most recent owners, Regal Cinemas Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn., ceased operation at the end of August.
Within days, Naos Entertainment, a fledgling, small-town outfit based 40 miles southwest of Montgomery in Greenville, Ala., stepped in and went to work remodeling what would be its third theater venture.
The aim all along was to open for Thanksgiving, a historically popular moviegoing time, said Marty Felts, Naos’ president and CEO.
“It’s gonna be close, but we’ve got final inspections happening Monday and Tuesday and we have pictures booked and people hired and we’re gonna be there selling tickets on Wednesday,” Felts said by phone Thursday. “The auditoriums, they’re pretty much ready. When you see those new seats ... they look real, real good.”
The theater has hired almost 50 employees, more than double the staff Rivergate had when it closed, General Manager P.J. Sardoma said.
On Thursday, while construction crews swept auditoriums and began preparing the lobby for tiling and painting, Sardoma said he hopes the theater will “give the people of Macon somewhere else to venture out to.”
Sardoma, a former sales manager for a department-store chain, has lived in Macon since 2003.
“I’ve got three kids,” he said, “and it’ll be nice just to be able to take them to a place where it’s family friendly.”
The renovated cineplex’s largest auditorium seats 284, and its smallest seats 84.
Operators say patrons can get self-serve, free refills on soft drinks in the lobby. Also, there is no regular box office. Customers will buy their tickets at the concession stand.
“A good majority of people do still buy concessions, so that makes it one less trip for the customer,” Sardoma said. “What that does is, the (employees) who would spend eight hours in the box office, now we can have those people ... going through every theater every 20 minutes and make sure everyone’s acting appropriately for optimal viewing experiences for customers.”

Wow, that's just plain BAD advertising. I'll bet anything there are 5 surround speakers on the left wall, 5 on the right, plus left, center, right = 13 + subwoofer as .1 = 13.1 in their mind. They probably also count the DRIVERS in each speaker, just like how Harkins tried to bs their customers. Ugh.
Specifically, I'll bet they're referring to the drivers. If they use 3-way front channels, there's 9, then assuming they use 2-way surrounds, each surround channel counts as 2, so 13.
