OK. While in college I paid my way by working as a broadcast engineer and stagehand. Occasionally I would get calls from the campus movie theatres with some sort of electrically-related emergency, or to climb the station tower to replace burned out aviation signals.

Now I work for the State University of New York teaching projection, audio, video, and lighting to theatre and media study students. I also freelance about town as a service tech, stagehand, lighting designer, and systems integrator working on everything from kindergarten dance recitals to broadway tours.

In my spare time I restore classic cars and sail on Lake Erie.

I am newly registered, and I figured this ought to be my first post.

I'm not a projectionist, but I am a total nut for movies an film technology. I grew up in the Dallas area, where I was lucky enough to see many movies in 70mm at the Northpark #1 and other fine theatres. (That's enough to turn just about anybody into a film nut, right?)

I'm 27 years old, I have a degree in physics, and work in the computer industry. I've worked at HP, Netscape, and currently work Apple. (I'm a software guy, so I have no idea when any cool new hardware is going to come out.)

Anyway, I've been reading the posts here at Film-Tech for a long time (nearly a year), and I'm amazed at the vast amount knowledge that can be found here. I probably won't post very much, since I'm not working directly in the film industry, but I've seen topics on occasion that I thought I might be able to comment on, so I'll chime in whever those come up.

Great to be here!

I think it's time I introduce myself. I've hesitated until I've become "official".

I am 34 years old and just beginning to work at the Regal Cinemas Barn 14 in Doylestown, Pa. I've always had an interest in film and projectors since my middle school days (Grade 6 thru 8). Never really followed up on my interest and kinda took another path as a computer operator and later a computer programmer. I enjoy my work as a computer programmer but about a year ago, I decided to try and follow up on my interest in film which led me here. After some phone calls and talking to others, I can finally say I've Made It!! I've been lurking for a while but now that I'm official, you may see more posts by me. Thanks To Film-Tech!

Hi everyone, I'm a newbee. This is my first post and this seemed the best place to start.I currently own the Marysville Drive In, in marysville, Cal. (in the land of cheap power). I first started in the industry when I was 12 yrs old (my first movie was "RODAN" 1957) and the manager (leonard smith) ask me if I would like to sweep down the isle for free movies. When I turned 15 I was trained to be the relief projectionist & have been involve ever since. I've been involved with the marysville drive in since 1969 and have run it permanently, starting in 1978, owned since 1986. I must say this has been so much fun over the years, not many people are lucky enough to spend a lifetime doing something they love to do!! To those of you lucky enough to own one of these jewels, we are saving something that is very special and is appreciated more & more as the years go by. My patrons thank me daily for keeping my little piece of American movie history alive and well. Robert, keep at it as long as you can. When this business gets in your blood, there is no turning back.

For lot of us old carbon arc dudes, I wonder if it was the ozone and fly ash that did it too us?

Well it just occured to me that I haven't posted a resonse to this thread yet so, here it goes....

Started working in theatres in 1992 and have worked at these theatres.

3/95-9-95 AMC The Grand 24 (we called it the Grind) at the time of opening largest theatre in the world.

Hi everybody. This seems to be a good time to stop lurking and get my name on the screen.
I began as a trainee projectionist at Warner Brothers in Finchley, North London UK in may 1997 after pestering everybody who might be in a position to get me into the projection box. I did my first solo shows after 3 months of training. It was nerve wrecking to go into the box all by myself that morning.
My training period lasted a year before the changed my title and gave me a few pence extra per hour. But god was I proud.

In 1998 I returned to Denmark and began looking for another Projection job. After 6 months in a small, but great single screen with automated change overs I got into a 7 screener with cinemeccanica Vic 5's and Vector automation. When our then boss left I was made chief (by default) so now I get to do all the fun bits like fixing light bulbs in hallways, kicking the ushers, reminding the boss that we are running film club every other sunday (he tends to forget that) and of course running the projectors. :-)

In my spare time I love NOT going to the cinema

Who the heck am I? I'm a crazy old female who is going to run her first film about March 28th.
I'm a retired art teacher, ex-Army Reserve NBC Instructor, fabric store owner, historical costumer, writer of 501(c)(3) applications, board member of a non-profit that organized and went into debt for half a million to purchase and renovate a defunct 1930s movie theater with holes in the roof.
I've scrubbed about every washer, sprocket and bearing in two Simplex XLs with manual turrets, have begun to see how things go together and am getting excited.
Now our engineer/tech will have to teach me how to run our machines....when he gets the adjustment tools to realign the mirror that the last operator fiddled with.
I've been lurking for a while, then running back to the board to rant and rave about what we REALLY need... don't ever get a board to run a movie theater. I've gotten my first ulcers.
So I'll go back to lurk format and continue to glean wonderful tidbits from the centuries of collected experience on this fabulous site!

Linda -- Sounds like you're in for a lot of fun! If you have any pics of the place, please send them to Brad so that he can scan them and put them up in the warehouse.

Sure will, Scott.
It's turning out quite nicely, all things considered. I wish we could have restored it but it had been trashed and nothing was left of the original interior but moldy carpet and fallen ceiling.
We went from a 400+ seat single to two screens: 87 and 213 seats.
It now has an Art Deco motif/color scheme for the interior and will eventually have the T-111, that was put on when the imported glass tile front was taken off, torn off the front and replaced with brick.
We have a partnership with the nearby Everhart Museum which will be setting up shows in the cases we now have in the long gallery leading to the ticket/concession area. (Non-profits have to have some gimick to keep the grants.) Although just bringing the movies back to this town will be a big help to the main street businesses and the people who live here.
We do have some photos and I'll try to borrow them and scan them to send.

Oh... I also meant to say that the title under my name..."film handler".... I may deserve in about another 6 months or so but its a bit more professional than "crazy old woman".

Hi Everybody. I guess its time to stop lurking and finally post. I've worked at the Gloucester Cinema in Gloucester, Mass as General Manager/Projectionist for 4 years. I'm 21 years old and am engaged to be married to fellow techer Rachel Carter this coming September. I love the theater business and am always interested to learn new things in projection. I'll probably be quiet to the forumns but I'll be lurking around.
