Gord….. if you are looking for good wine look out for wines produced from the Margaret River region of Western Australia. This is a new wine producing area which has and is producing some outstanding wines, red & white. This area has only been producing for about 25 years and is receiving rave revues from wine experts in the U.K and Europe, and certainly has the french and germans taking notice of the quality of the wines their producing. The area does have a couple of large wineries but mainly consists of small ones. The ones that may make it over your way are Leeuwin Estate , Evans & Tate , Vasse Felix, Capel Vale , Driftwood and a top little winery, Cullens Wines. Houghtons Wines is another to look out for, they supply wine to Qantas for a lot of their flights.

Anyone here know what the difference is between Victoria Bitter & Melbourne Bitter besides the label. Same towm, same brewery ?

Gordon,

VB and Melbourne Bitter are both made in Melbourne at CUB's plant along with Carlton, Guinness and about 20 other brands.

The difference is the taste which is achieved using different combinations of hops, malt and yeast as well as the brewing process. The two main types of hops used by CUB are Pride of Ringwood and Pride of Victoria. These hops and yeast strains are unique to CUB.

The left over yeast used to be sent to Kraft to make vegemite but now it is recovered and used again. This means that Kraft has to source their own yeast, I'm not sure if they actually grow it themselves or not.

These beers can be made anywhere in the world (eg at CUB's brewery in Fiji) all they need is the correct ingredients and away they go.

While on the subject of Aussie Beer ,Anyone tried beer from the Cascade Brewery in Tasmania.They make a selection of beers from draught to premium larger.They use Tasmanian hops,and mountain water,not a bad drop

.This brewery is now owned by CUB.
Strange how this thread started with Vegemite and now to beer.

Not only does it describe in great detail the history and features of the main australian beers, it delves into Australian pub culture, with explanation of terms such as "piking" and a guide to the etiquette of "shouting". I found it a blast to read, and I'm a local!

It's also a good excuse to bump this back to the top to expose many more unsuspecting newly registered Film-Techers to the famous song included in page 2 of this thread.

It's strange here in NZ we love Marmite as much as Vegemite I guess it's just the taste "Marmite is sweeter than vegemite"

I've never found Vegemite for sale here in Cleveland, Ohio. But I have bought Marmite from my local Food Co-op.

There is a computer named Vegemite (with a jar proudly sitting ontop of the machine) in the Astronomy Department of Case Western Reserve University.

Marmite is the pleasant tasting version of Vegemite.

C.D. or Steinlager are the pleasant tasting versions of Fosters.

Reminds me of Monty Python @ the Hollywood Bowl.

What I'd like to know is why it took us Kiwi's so long to get on this thread.
Marmite is nicer.
VB stands for Vile Brew (not Viitimin Bei as some Brisbanian put it)
Steinlager is the beer we export to Aussie and the states coz it's

.
Pavlova (a giant meringue filled with whipped cream and fruit) was named by an Aussie chef, invented in New Zealand (according to Oz Research)
Lamingtons rock - prefer jelly to choc personally.
Kiwifruit are really selectively bred Chinese Gooseberrys (AKA Gorilla Balls)
Kiwi's are flightless birds about the size of a large chicken but can run 40mph.
But have you tried Hokey Pokey icecream.
What about Lemon & Paeroa
