>>What I'd like to know is why it took us Kiwi's so long to get on this thread.<<

There are a few Aussies who could give you guys a suggestion as to why you were all so slow, but I wouldn't be one of them.

Marmite: Blecch!

Is there ONE beer that a country exports to the world that isn't considered crap in the originating country?

NZ=Stein Lager Australia = Fosters Belgium = Stella Artois

I'm sure the list could go on.

"Is there ONE beer that a country exports to the world that isn't considered crap in the originating country?"

That's a good question. For those outside of the US, are there any beers from the US that are appreciated in your part of the world?

If we have anyone from Ireland: What's the opinion at home of Guiness? (if I've heard correctly, John, this might be the answer to your question.)

Anyone from the Czech Republic? Pilsner Urquell?

For the Brits: Newcastle?

Or Swine Lager as it is pronounced here.

Although my deep dark secret is that I enjoy a Steiney every now & then.

When in Oz, my preferred drop is V.B.
Please don't hate me for that.

I'm glad someone mentioned Marmite - personally I'm not keen on the stuff; tastes like the inside of really old socks to me What's the connection (if any) between Vegemite and Marmite? What's the difference (in ingredients, as well as flavour!).

Yes, those Aussie beers are truly vile - but so is the swill imported into Asutralia from the UK (Theakston's XB as I recall and some otherdross - maybe Bass (seems likely since we inflict that on the US too)).

Joe: our Newcastle office is about 100 yards from the Newcastle Brown Ale brewery, and the smell in the atmosphere is enough to put me off ever drinking the stuff!

I think that the main problem with exporting British beers is that they tend to be bitters (ale) rather than lagers, which do not travel well. The barrels have to lie still for a few days before being 'tapped' in order to avoid sediment being drawn off with the beer, and the temperature requirements for beer cellars are very specific. I was once shown the cellar of a CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) approved pub, and I recognised the make of air handling unit in there - they're also used in archival film vaults! You can't just bottle this stuff and ship it to wherever. There are some ales that are processed and then bottled, but IMHO they don't taste anything like the cask-conditioned stuff.

Lagers and Pilsners do not generate sediment and so can be sealed in bottles, shipped, and then cooled before drinking, all without affecting the taste in any way. I think this is why European beers tend to be far more successful in export markets.

"Marmite" sounds like tiny, little, chopped up bits of rodent!
Sounds a bit like a name that doesn't "translate" once it's taken out of the country of origin. (eg: "Coca Cola" translates to "Taste of your dead relatives" in Chinese.) Any history on the subject, like a web link?

OK... kidding aside.
I would also jump on the "trade" bandwagon. If there's anybody from Down Under who wants to trade local products I'd be willing to send something to them.

I have an uncle who makes and sells REAL maple syrup if that interests anybody.
I have another uncle who makes a pretty mean bottle of "White Lightning".

difference between Vege- and Mar-mite. Ones a yeast extract (V'mite?), the other a Malt extract (Marmite).
What about Bovril?
US beer. I didn't know they produced any.
I worked in the US Antarctic Program supply store in Christchurch for a season. All the personnal that came through spent their time drinking Kiwi beers in preference to States-side stuff. (Goes to show i spose; even if they thought DB Draught, Lion Brown and Steiny was good)

...hmm a beer from the US that isn't revolting? Stuff from the micro-breweries. Sam Adams is one that seems to be fairly well-liked around here.

Bovril is a beef extract based "substance"

I found a website where you can order Vegemite ,Marmite and Bovril and several other "British" products.

Take a look at http://www.britishdelights.com

As for american beer ,one of the best places I found was the Goose Island brew pub in Chicago http://www.gooseisland.com/beers/beers.html

Don't think they send it over to UK though.

Hi all

Regarding vegemite, I find the best way to enjoy it is to spread some (a little only - it's quite strong) on a toasted crumpet with a little bit of real butter. Yum!

Best beer - Guinness. Yum! (I'm of Irish ancestry) It goes down the throat nicely.

I also have sampled some overseas delicacies in a similar vein. In New Zealand I found L&P to be a great drink.

And Californian churros and root beer are great also. Pity you can't get a decent californian style churro here in Australia. Village sell some at a cinema here in Melbourne but they are pretty awful to be honest.

cheers Peter
