Author Topic: Musical Tastes Manny Knowles "What are these things and WHY are they BLUE???" I like just about everything on Steve Guttag's list...yaaay Steve! But while I enjoy The Beatles, I'm not one of those fans who can tell you lots of trivia about them and their songs. Love the sound of The Beach Boys and it's so true that Jan & Dean have the same sound. Motown rocks huge and I'm a sucker for "good time oldies." When I lived in Los Angeles my favorite station was KRTH 101; nothin' but oldies. Perhaps my next fave station would have been STAR 98.7 which played 80's and 90's pop including DiVinyls singing "I Touch Myself" or Jewel singing "Foolish Games" and everything in between. Today I find myself listening to a lot of Coldplay and Radiohead. I'm a huge fan of Elton John's work. The "Live in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra" album is full of dramatic renditions of some of his best work. Not part of that concert, but among my favorites would be: Chameleon Roy Rogers Someone Saved My Life Tonight Levon ...and, gee, too many others to list really... I like a lot of Billy Joel's older stuff, too. Interesting that -- like Sir Elton -- Billy also has a "Live" album ("Songs in the Attic") that I still play over and over. On that album, I really like "Miami 2017" and "I've Loved These Days." Pink Floyd. In particular: "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" (entire albums). Roger Waters' album "Amused to Death" is also good all the way through. And then there's The Eagles. Sheesh! Where to begin? "Hotel California" and "New Kid In Town" are well-known and I think I'm old enough to remember when they were new...Yikes! And then there's "Desperado" and a lesser-known gem of theirs called "The Last Resort." And since we've gone there with Country music I might as well come out of the closet and admit that I dig a lot of John Denver's stuff from the 1970s. In addition, I have a fondness for folk music, too. "What Have They Done to the Rain?" is one of my favorites. And, while I'm busy coming out...Madonna, Madonna, Madonna. Bette Midler, Bette Midler, Bette Midler. Some good mood music -- Seal, Enigma and Dead Can Dance. I used to be a real collector of movie soundtracks but lately I haven't been hearing that many original scores that impress me. Some of my favorite scores are: SOMEWHERE IN TIME SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL THE MISSION STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN Just to name a few. And then, of course, we have Show Tunes (aka Musical Theatre). My favorites are: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (Heaven On Their Minds, Pilate's Dream, Gethsemane & Superstar) MISS SAIGON (Bui-Doi & Why God?) CATS (Old Dueteronomy, Memory & Macavity The Mystery Cat) COMPANY (Not Getting Married, The Ladies Who Lunch & Being Alive) LES MISERABLES (Bring Him Home & I Dreamed A Dream) PIPPIN (Corner of the Sky & With You) CABARET (Wilkommen, Don't Tell Mama, Two Ladies, Perfectly Marvelous, Maybe This Time & Cabaret) CHICAGO (All That Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, Class & Nowadays) I listen to a lot of classical music but I'm not really a collector and I'm not very good at recognizing pieces of music and coming up with the correct name or composer. I just know the tunes. Having said that, however, I am very familiar with Handel's "Messiah" and Mozart's "Requiem in D Minor" so I guess I'm not totally a lost cause. There is some rap that I can get into: Eminem (Criminal, Kill You, Stan, The Real Slim Shady), Bubba Sparx (Ugly), Missy Elliot (Get Your Freak On), Mystikal (Shake Your Ass), Nelly (Hot in Here), Trick Daddy (I'm a Thug) and, last but not least...Tone Loc (Funky Cold Medina).  |  IP: Logged Sean M. Newer listenings - Jeff Buckley (still and always) Pooka (obscure English band, hard to find f'in amazing!) Peter Mulvey (singer-songwriter, plays alot around the the us and Britain) Mars Volta (anyone who likes early Yes progressive should check them out) Wilco (Especially Yankee Foxtrot Hotel great great album little rock a little alt-country) and lot's and lot's of local and regional music. I listen to rap and country and that seems to be the most hated music here. I also like some Metallica. But rap lately has really been crap.
