Author Topic: Musical Tastes Mike Blakesley Film God Posts: 12767 From: Forsyth, Montana Registered: Jun 99 posted 11-01-2004 11:12 PM                        My tastes vary wildly according to the mood I'm in. Some of the older/offbeat stuff I like is: Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Quincy Jones, Talk Talk, Inspiral Carpets, George Winston, Burt Bacharach (his own records, not necessarily the songs recorded by other artists). I also like to collect CDs of "The Jack Benny Program" (old time radio show, for you youngsters). Mainstream stuff: Pretty much all 70s rock, although I get irritated that the same songs get all the glory all the time. Hey, oldies radio people: Bachman Turner Overdrive had a lot of great songs, so STOP PLAYING "TAKIN' CARE OF BUSINESS" ALREADY and PLAY SOMETHING ELSE, like "Not Fragile" or "Gimme Your Money Please" or "Hold Back the Water"! Fleetwood Mac was my favorite group in my growing up years. "Go Your Own Way" was one of the greatest single records of all time, in my book. They probably still would be my favorite, if they had Christine McVie in the ranks. Without her, they're about half as good. Also: Boston, Steve Miller, all that kind of stuff. Soul music is another favorite when I'm in the mood. Probably my favorite black singer is Stevie Wonder, although I like Ray Charles too -- he was the epitome of cool. I like some of the great disco tunes too; some of that music was great and there's no denying it. O'Jays, Tavares, Bee Gees, Trammps ("Disco Inferno," a better groove than any dance music made today), KC & the Sunshine Band, Donna Summer, and others. I like many of the records produced and written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter. They were known mostly as producers, and writers, and had a lot of hits, mostly with the Four Tops and the Grass Roots. They had a style and sound all their own. I like quite a bit of progressive rock. Alan Parsons, Pink Floyd, Rush, Kansas, that kind of thing. And mellow stuff: America, the Eagles, Walter Egan, Kate Bush. Newer: I like Coldplay a lot. Their "Rush of Blood" album is excellent. And I tend to like a lot of the new rock bands...Green Day, some Limp Bizkit, Seether, and so on. Basically if it's got a good beat and a melody, I'm in. Ben Folds is good. I like Elvis Costello. The album he did with Burt Bacharach ("Painted from Memory") is amazing. The new Duran Duran single (Sunrise) is excellent. I like Metallica's more melodic stuff like "Enter Sandman." I know, that was their sellout style, but I don't care. Like I said...good beat, melody. That speed metal stuff does nothing for me. My favorite guitar player is Carlos Santana, but his newer material can't compare to the first five or six Santana albums. Compared to him, Eddie Van Halen is just a showoff. All chops, no soul. I also like Chet Atkins sometimes, but he was maybe a little TOO mellow for me. My favorite "rock singer" is probably still Elton John. Some of those singles of his will live forever, and he is still making great music today. I don't mind the occasional rap, but I honestly cannot understand the big deal about Eminem. His stuff all sounds the same to me. Why he is the king of hip hop will forever be a mystery to me. I really like some of Outkast's stuff also. I have an XM radio and listen a lot to Channel 22, "The Mix." People who say there is no good music being made today should get an XM and check that channel out. I've been O.D.ing on Bill Frisell lately. I just got the final schedule for the shows we are doing this spring. We'll be having Bill Frisell and the Unspeakable Orchestra on our stage this coming May. I got the promo CD out and started listening to it. After hearing it for about 10 minutes I took the CD home and ripped it to my iPod.
