Kodak (Dr. Fred Kolb) actually presented a technical paper and demonstration of a total immersion wet gate projector at a SMPTE Conference in the early 1960's. It completely covered base-side and superficial emulsion-side scratches, and greatly improved focus stability. The drawback was the use of chlorinated solvent in the booth:
