This does in fact occur but only to a small degree, IIRC. If you remember your chem labs where some procedures called for deionized water that's what they were talking about. I guess you could call ordinary water a solution of hydrogen hydroxide in dihydrogen oxide! It is left to the reader as an exercise to calculate the concentration in moles/liter.  |  IP: Logged Daryl C. W. Although it would be hydroxic acid in hydrogen hydroxide. Steve is correct. Some dissociation would have to happen for DHMO to 'become' hydrogen hydroxide. The systematic covalent name of the H2O molecule is dihydrogen monoxide or DHMO. Strictly speaking, this would only be pure water. The systematic acid name of water is hydroxic acid or hydroxilic acid, though outside of a first year chem lab run by a witch that doesn't speak English, you probably won't see these terms much. The systematic alkali name of water is hydrogen hydroxide.
