Based upon Jeremy's Film-Tech pic, I don't think I would want him to deliver a pizza to me, YIKES! But seriously, I understand the delivery drivers' issue and tip accordingly to courtesy and timeliness. One thing that gets my goat, however, is when I call-in a carry-out order (for ME to pick up) and, when I arrive and pick up the order and charge it to my credit card, they give me the receipt to sign and the total has not been completed...it is BLANK for me to fill in AFTER a TIP is either included or zeroed out. The NERVE of the people to write in everything but that and EXPECT me to tack a little extra on...just for the privilege of buying and picking up their food! Reminds me of the time a friend told me he was standing in line at the carry-out window of a restaurant, to pick up his call-in order, and he saw the guy in front of him take his food and place a dollar in the tip jar at the counter. The guy left and the teen-ager behind the counter looked at my friend and said "Cheap @sshole!" My friend then took his order and paid for it and replied, "You think that was cheap? Watch this!" and he left! Society needs to wake up to the reality of the economy and how the middle-class and real job opportunities are being hammered and eliminated...at the same time, manners, etiquette, and just a general respect for others seem to be lacking.

You guys have all this bass ackwards..
The store owner has factored delivery into the set cost of the item being sold. The fact that anyone automatically EXPECTS to be tipped just for doing the job they took is assinine!
I'll post more later on when I have more time... I've held off commenting this long, it can wait until later tonight...
(now that I'm home) quote: Bobby Henderson Anyone who insists on not tipping a pizza delivery person needs to drive to the store and get their own pizza. Simple as that. A customer should not use the delivery service if he's not willing to pay for it.
I can't believe that you honestly are able to reason this out. Some of your other ideas/beliefs I go along with just fine.. but this idea... it's total shit..
Your analogy that a customer basically being wrong for not tipping, or being under the false assumption that it is REQUIRED... well, just plain backwards... I'm of no concern at all of the financial arrangements between the pizza shop and whomever brings it to my door. Advertising FREE DELIVERY is just that. The person bringing it should never EXPECT a tip and they should be appreciative when they get one.. as opposd to the idea that they are automatically DUE it...
If that drivers labor cost isn't factored in to the food being purchased... that's the owner's problem to deal with... They factor in those damn window servers and cashiers, don't they?
I tip on most every delivery, but that's because the drivers that come to my house speak to me.. even if it's a simple "hey how ya doin' tonight" prior to telling me my price... That's decent customer service, in my eyes... Those who don't speak first... they get a tip, but generally a buck on a pie (regardless of size).
I'm shaking my head at this one. ![[Frown]](frown.gif) [ 11-21-2004, 12:15 AM: Message edited by: Jason Black ]

quote: Bobby Henderson I don't think tipping a pizza delivery guy is extorsion at all.
Okay, let's see... "if a guy 'stiffs' you, you can expect to get a little something 'extra' in with your pizza next time"... Sure as hell sounds like extortion to me. quote: Bobby Henderson What seems totally unreasonable is the idea of expecting some guy to drive his car, use his gas and even risk his life just to deliver a pizza to someone without getting paid for it. Deliver pizzas for free? That's bullshit.
Bobby, you are missing the point. That is the STORE'S problem, not the customer's -- the customer is patronizing the STORE, which has an offer of FREE DELIVERY. Not saying tipping isn't warranted in certain cases, and I DO tip... it just shouldn't be expected in lieu of wages, from the wrong end of the equation.
Incidentally, I risk my life everyday in an 18-wheeler; not only on the highway, but other things that are potentially dangerous, like getting out in rest areas in the middle of the night, sleeping on the shoulders of on-ramps or in certain truck stops, and delivering in depressed high-crime areas. Trucks are hijacked all the time and drivers killed, especially with the terror climate the way it is. Drivers have been found killed in their trucks as they were sleeping -- sometimes for no apparent reason.
So, do I expect a tip from the customer, when I pull in loaded with millions of dollars in goods --- just for doing my job and getting it there?! No, I get paid by the mile and I'm happy with it, because that's what I signed on to do. 'Why... the customer's company can just as well use their own rigs to get trailers back and forth, why should I deliver anything to them without getting a tip? After all, it IS customer service...' That attitude is ridiculous.
And, what Jason said.

Well, it seems that people's views on tipping pizza delivery breaks down into 2 categories.
- Those (like me) who feel they are not obligated to tip, because the delivery person is an employee of the store, doing their basic job. They are not using their car and gas to save me time and money. They are using their car and gas to deliver the store's product to me and collect the purchase price for the store. The fact that the delivery person may be underpaid is not my fault. This is not to say that people who feel this way do not tip, but we do not feel obligated to.
- Those that feel that tipping is an obligation. From reading this thread, these people break down into the following categories.
- Those who tip because they fear getting an extra "surprise" on their next order. Let call this what it is, extortion. It is certainly not a tip.
- Those who tip because they feel that a business's low paid employees should be compensated directly by the customer, because they are providing you a service rather than their employer.
- Those who feel that they are expected to tip, because the delivery person is working for them, not the store.
Tipping has gotten completely out of control, and forsters an atmosphere where buisness owners can get away with paying people low saleries. This is also why solutions like unionizing pizza delivery people will ultimatly fail. As things stand now, there will always be someone else who would be willing to work for tips. If there were no tips to be had, then the store owners would have to pay their delivery staff adiquitly.

Tim, tell you what, if you can prove that I make more money than you and you have a crappy paying job(pizza delivery, waiter), than I'll send you a few bucks. Thats why I tip. Those people are just like me, working hard, but for for very little money, and since I'm in no way hurting for money, I tip them. If I can afford to go out to eat(different subject) or order a pizza, then I can afford to tip and help that guy and possibly his family.

Hey, get this... we just went to a pizza place, sat down, and NO ONE came to serve us. Therefore, Tim's tip meter zero'd out before we made enough noise for the waitress to stop at our table. In a restaurant with only 3 or 4 other customers, it took 20 minutes to lasso some service. Then, the little 16 or 17 yr. old girl handed us menus and asked if we needed some time to decide. My wife told her, "Yes, we just opened the menus." Several other infractions occurred that I won't go into, because I've got to get out on the big road and go to work.
Needless to say, we left NO TIP and, dammit, I'm glad and have NO GUILT about it! In fact, they should've paid US!
I dare anyone to chastise me.
